Sutherlin tops Cottage Grove at 4A tourney

CORVALLIS — Fifth-ranked Sutherlin broke a fourth-quarter tie and ended the game with an 11-5 run Tuesday to defeat No. 2 Cottage Grove 38-32 in an OSAA Class 4A girls basketball state quarterfinals at Gill Coliseum.
Sutherlin (21-5) scored five straight points after Cottage Grove (21-5) had tied the game at 27-27 with 6:40 remaining.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a lay-in by Tess Bennett with 5:56 left. Two baskets by Amanda Hutchings in the final 1:30 helped the Bulldogs hold on.
Bennett had 14 points and six rebounds and Hutchings added eight points and 11 rebounds for Sutherlin.
Reed Levings scored 15 points for Cottage Grove.
Cottage Grove shot 12-of-45 from the field, while Sutherlin was 13-of-34. Sutherlin had a 34-21 rebounding advantage.
Sutherlin moves on to play Stayton in a Thursday semifinal. No. 7 Hidden Valley and Marist will play in the other semifinal.
Stayton 52, Newport 32
Stayton’s 17-0 first-half run Tuesday was enough to push the Eagles to a 52-32 win against No. 6 Newport.
Stayton (19-11) turned an early 4-1 deficit into an 18-4 lead with 6:45 left in the second quarter.
Newport (21-5) got no closer than 12 the rest of the game. Kelsey Atkins had 25 points — including 5 of 6 from 3-point range — and seven rebounds to lead Stayton.
The Eagles had to win two Capital Conference playoff games and two state playoff games to reach the tournament. Unranked in the latest poll, the Eagles tied for fourth in the Capital.
They defeated Gladstone and Molalla in conference playoffs before winning state playoff road games at La Grande and Tillamook.
Rylee Peterson had 18 points and eight rebounds for Newport.
Hidden Valley 46, Ontario 33
Jamie Richardson had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists Tuesday as No. 7 Hidden Valley knocked off top-ranked Ontario 46-33.
Haley Fikso added 14 points and Laura Silva 12 for Hidden Valley (23-4).
Ontario (23-4) was led by Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvili, who had nine points and four rebounds.
Hidden Valley, of Grants Pass, never trailed. The game was tied just once, at 7-7 early in the second quarter.
Fikso scored six of Hidden Valley’s eight second-quarter points and the Mustangs led 15-10 at halftime. Hidden Valley held Ontario to 2 of 18 shooting from the field for the first half.
Marist 45, Seaside 29
Marist used an 8-0 fourth-quarter run Tuesday to hold off Seaside for a 45-29 win.
Marshall King had 14 points and 14 rebounds and Lydia Gust added 12 points for Marist (21-9), of Eugene.
Seaside (18-7) was led by Marla Olstedt, who had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Seaside had closed within 27-22 on a 10-2 run early in the fourth quarter when Marist finally pulled away.
Seaside shot 3-of-26 in the first half and 9-of-49 for the game. Marist was 14-of-39 overall.
