Marshfield swept the singles and doubles matches against visiting Grants Pass on Tuesday, claiming an 8-0 win over the Cavemen in a boys tennis match.
“Three of our singles matches were close, and Marshfield fought and won all three,” said coach Paula Massie. “It was a great job by MHS.”
Jon Massie edged Jannik Becker in the No. 1 singles match, winning tiebreakers in both sets. Brandon Benson was stretched to three sets by Jordan VanDelden and won the third-set tiebreaker 11-9.
“Brandon Benson played really well, winning the third-set tiebreaker and keeping the pressure on his opponent,” Paula Massie said.
Zaq Jones also won in three sets, while David Stys took a 6-2, 6-1 win in his match.
Marshfield’s doubles teams of Markus Boesl and David Perrin, Jamey Moriarty and Brogan Trull, and Josh Bott and Andre VanRooyen dominated their matches and the Pirates won the fourth doubles match by forfeit.
Bulldogs tie GP
North Bend and Grants Pass tied 4-4 in their nonleague match Tuesday.
The Bulldogs got a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles by Cody Ferguson and also picked up doubles wins by the teams of Alan Landrum and Michael Kahler, Adam Escoto and Chris Cipolla, and Kris Karavanich and Mickey Tantiphipop.
All four Grants Pass wins came in matches that went three sets.
“Even though the four three-setters didn’t go our way, it was great for those guys to play the extra points during the first match of the year,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood.

Bulldogs sweep Panthers
North Bend’s Josh Hampton had home runs in both games of a nonleague doubleheader to help the Bulldogs to a sweep of host Gold Beach on Tuesday.
Kale Forrester had a second-inning grand slam and drove in six runs for the Bulldogs in the first game. Hampton and Alex Clark each had three RBIs.
North Bend pitchers Bryce Weidman and Bruce Ohlrich limited the Panthers to four hits. Mitch McDonald drove in two of the runs with a fifth-inning double.
In the second game, Skyler Walton had a home run and double and drove in five runs for the Bulldogs and Hampton went deep again. Ethan Ottemiller drove in three runs.
Forrester and Ohlrich limited the Panthers to three hits. McDonald had another double and drove in one run and Herbie Smith drove in the other two for Gold Beach.
Gold Beach coach Greg Brown said his pitchers struggled with their control in the season opener.
The Panthers gave up 12 walks and committed nine errors in the first game and had seven walks and seven errors in the nightcap.
“It was unbelievable,” Brown said. “Just kind of the wheels fell off the cart.”
Gold Beach is scheduled to host Del Norte’s junior varsity team today and face Rogue River on Saturday.
Tigers win
Bandon opened the season with a win, beating North Bend’s junior varsity team 10-4 on Tuesday.
Connor Jackson had two hits and three RBIs for the Tigers and Archie Garrett also drove in two runs. Garrett and Gage Gant had two runs each.
Bandon took advantage of North Bend’s pitchers struggling with their control.
“They had 12 walks, and we had a few timely hits early on to go with those walks,” said Bandon coach Gary Chrismon.
Four Bandon pitchers, meanwhile, gave up seven walks in the game, including four in the sixth inning, when the Bulldogs scored all their runs.
“We did some things OK,” Chrismon said. “We did some things we need to improve on.
“We made some plays. In the first five innings, they didn’t get a hit and we had nine strikeouts and three walks.”
Chrismon was happy to get the game against the Bulldogs, especially with Sunset Conference play opening next week and rain postponing the contest from its scheduled date Monday.
“North Bend has a great program,” he said. “It was just good to get a game in after yesterday and how windy and nasty it was. Especially since we have league early this year. We need to play.”
Cubs top Vikings
Cody Doroan pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Newport to a 6-2 win at Siuslaw in the season opener for the Vikings on Tuesday.
Jake Bond went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Cubs.
Zach Laxague was 2-for-3 and drove in both Siuslaw runs. Pitchers Kevin Warren, Trevor Roberts and Tyler Mais combined for nine strikeouts in the losing effort.
SOFTBALL

The Eagles had 15 hits in the game, including four by Hayley Robinson, while the Braves managed just four as a team.
