Update: Salmon season to be delayed

Delay the seasons. That’s the word from state and federal fishery managers meeting Wednesday in Sacramento, Calif.
They gathered to discuss inseason adjustments to sport and commercial salmon seasons in California and Oregon that were planned — originally — to open on March 15.
They came to consensus today that opening the seasons would run the risk of catching too many Sacramento fall Chinook. The stock already showed low numbers of returning spawners in 2007 and is expected to have even fewer returns in 2008.
Delaying the seasons until at least April 15 will allow the fleets and managers to continue working on possible salmon seasons for the remainder of the year. The change in management must be approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
The Pacific Fishery Management Council meets all this week and will continue working on salmon and groundfish issues through Friday. By the end of the day on Friday, the council will approve three options each for sport and commercial fishermen to but put out for public review. Council members will review input and further scientific information pertaining to the options when they meet again in Seattle April 6-12. A final decision on seasons will be approved at the end of the April meeting, which will then be formally approved by the governing agency, the National Marine Fisheries Service.
