I spent a year in Iraq with the military in 2004-05, and before going, out of curiosity, I read the Koran. I have always been interested in Islam, wondering what it was about this religion that causes it to grow so quickly and keep its followers. I personally became a Christian at the age of 18 and have been solidly committed to my faith because of the truthfulness of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

After spending a year in Iraq and reading the Koran, I have concluded there are two factors that produce this seemingly endless growth of Islam. Islam, similar to Roman Catholicism, propagates it faith through birth. If you are born in a Muslim family, you are a Muslim, What you personally believe does not matter. If you father is a Muslim and you mother some other religion, even an atheist, you are still a Muslim. An exception to this might be if your father were a Christian and mother a Muslim. You would be a Christian unless you chose to become a Muslim.

Now, one a Muslim, always a Muslim. You cannot convert from Islam to Christianity or any other religion without incurring a death sentence. Islam is the only world religion of which I am aware that teaches this. It is in the Koran and is part of the Sharia Law. By the way, any faithful Muslim who is aware of an individual converting from Islam to another religion has the personal responsibility to execute that convert by whatever means possible.

The second factor contributing to the seemingly endless growth of Islam is fear. The Koran has certain moral teachings as do most religions, that are appealing and socially acceptable. The consequences of breaking laws are not so appealing and are, in some cases, barbaric. Muslims, for the most part, obey the laws they live under out of fear. This fear affects not only the individual believer whether a child, mother, father or political leader; but also affects all of society worldwide. The news media is a good example. For the most part, the news media is especially careful of what they say about Islamic faith and their beliefs. This kind of concern is not evident when reporting on Christian faith and beliefs.

This brings up some very interesting questions about one of the Democratic presidential candidates, Barak Obama. Since his father was a Muslim and mother an atheist, how is it that he could publicly state that he has converted to Christianity without there being a public outrage from the Muslim world? Why is it that the news media has never addressed this issue? Are they afraid to? Could it be that the Muslims actually would like to see Barak Obama become president of the United States because of his promise to remove our troops from Iraq? Is it possible that Barak Obama is publicly a Christian, but secretly a Muslim for the time being, and because of his secret faith he personally does not believe American troops should be on Muslim soil?

I think these are just a few questions Americans should take into consideration before casting their ballots.

By the Democratic Nominee, in his calculated political wisdom finally quitting TRINITY UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST proves Rev. Wright's words that Obama is a 'typical politician'. He had thrown his white Grandmother under the bus, Rev. Wright under the bus, now he threw his whole church under the bus. Watch out Michelle! You married a man who puts his personal agenda over everything else. After 20 years of hearing the same type of sermons, witnessing the same type of actions and being a party to the same mind set, Obama has now decided to quit the Church that he has so defended for months.

It is now not classified so you need to get your facts staight and quit watching the biased CNN. I am by no means a McCain Fan. I disagree with him on many of his positions.
He just happens to be the least socialist of the 3 candidates left.
Actually Bob Barr & Ron Paul might bear some looking into depending on what their stands are on spending and economic issues.
So far not one of the 3 has indicated they are willing to change the status quo where it comes to the banking and creating money out of thin air.
This after all is why the price of everything is skyrocketing. The dollar is worth very little and getting worse the more money we flood the economy with.
I don't believe the massive spending programs the Dem's are talking about will help this situation.

Disappointed - you may want to read this.

WASHINGTON (CNN) The U.S. military's 1st and only study looking into ties between Saddam Hussein's Iraq and al Qaeda showed no connection between the two, according to a military report released by the Pentagon.
The report released by the Joint Forces Command 5 years after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq said it found no "smoking gun" after reviewing about 600,000 Iraqi documents captured in the invasion and looking at interviews of key Iraqi leadership held by the U.S., Pentagon officials said.

Jesus is the ONLY true God. He did die, rose, and is alive today. Those who say it does not matter what religion our president believes, I'm sorry to say, but it does. The leader of this country needs to not depend on himself, but on God.

I get sick of hearing people bash the war and they are not the one's fighting it! If you have not fought, your opinion on it really means nothing.

I quote Steve who said, "As An Iraqi Freedom VET it eats me ALIVE to hear ANYONE say we went to war for oil. DID NOT HAPPEN. Get your facts straight. We went to Iraq to end terrorism. Terrorism started in Iraq and Afganistan. That is why we are there." I say THANK YOU!!! It really irritates me to hear that we were lied to by Bush and blah, blah, blah.

There are lots of ways for you to find out more about Obama. He's written two best-selling autobiographical books. There's plenty of other stuff that has been written about him. A lot of it (the positive stuff) is even true.

Those "powerful forces" are just the millions of Americans, like myself, who are tired of big-machine politics and want inelligent decisions made for the safety and benefit of all citizens, not just the wealthy and corporations.

In the meantime, calm down and take a deep breath. Don't be afraid. Everything will be just fine.

Obama is certainly no illiterate, hesaid the right thing the wrong way. Maybe he will learn from it.

CC - Obama's statements were in regard to sex eduation and withholding it from teens. When children are denied information and are allowed to live in ignorance regarding both contraception and the consequences of unprotected sex, then that is the "punishment" he is referring to. It was not a statement about having children in general, though some wish to perpetuate that "spin" on his comment.

Obama is just as crooked as the rest of them whatever his religious affliation is. Anyone involved with the CFR (and all the candidates are) should not be allowed to run for president.

In 2006 Obama was involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, “Tony” Rezko. In 2007 it was reported that just two months after he joined the Senate, Obama purchased $50,000 worth of stock in speculative companies whose major investors were his biggest campaign contributors. One of the companies was a biotech concern that benefited from legislation Obama pushed just two weeks after the senator purchased $5,000 of the company’s shares. Obama was also nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law.

Obama has been "groomed" for this position by the powers that rule. He has a prolific presidential lineage that features Democrats and Republicans. His distant cousins include George W. Bush Jr and Sr, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry S. Truman and James Madison. Other cousins include VP Cheney, Sir Winston Churchill and Civil War General Robert E. Lee.

A little more of Senator Obama's support of Israel follows:

On August 16, 2007, Obama issued a press release supporting the provision of $30 billion in military aid to Israel.
Obama's presidential campaign's position paper on Israel says, "Barack Obama has consistently supported foreign assistance to Israel. He defends and supports the annual foreign aid package that involves both military and economic assistance to Israel and has advocated increased foreign aid budgets to ensure that these funding priorities are met. Additionally, he has called for sustaining the unique U.S.-Israel defense relationship by fully funding military assistance and continuing cooperative work on missile defense programs, such as the Arrow."
In a January 29 fact sheet, the National Jewish Democratic Council stated that Obama "has voted multiple times in favor of foreign aid and is a leader in pushing for divestment from Iran."
An article of the March 3 issue of Newsweek reported: "Almost unanimously, American Jewish leaders say Obama's voting record and public pronouncements paint him squarely as an Israel supporter.

Janice wrote on Mar 31, 2008 4:11 PM:

If Senator Obama is anti-Israel he is doing a good job of faking it.

On November 10, 2005, Obama voted in favor of the conference report for the bill making appropriations for the State Department, including more than $2.2 billion in military aid to Israel.
On February 14, 2007, Obama voted in favor of a continuing resolution that included more than $2.3 billion in military aid to Israel.
On March 2, 2007, Obama told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC): "At the same time, we must preserve our total commitment to our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense programs. This would help Israel maintain its military edge and deter and repel attacks from as far as Tehran and as close as Gaza."

Crude Designs by Greg Muttitt states, " Iraq has the third largest oil reserves on the planet – accounting for 10% of the world total. Iraq is also reckoned to have the world’s largest unexplored potential, primarily in the Western Desert. On top of its 115 billion barrels of proven reserves, Iraq is estimated to have between 100 and 200 billion barrels of further possible (as yet undiscovered) reserves. Furthermore, not only are Iraqi and Gulf reserves huge, they are mostly onshore, in favourable reservoir structures, and extractable at extremely low cost."
In a speech to the Institute of Petroleum in London in 1999, Dick Cheney, then CEO of oil services company Halliburton, commented:

“By 2010 we will need on the order of an additional fifty million barrels a day. So where is the oil going to come from? ... While many regions of the world offer great oil opportunities, the Middle East with two thirds of the world's oil and the lowest cost, is still where the prize ultimately lies.”(5)

Obama's book “Dreams From My Father" In the book Sen.Obama repeatedly refers to a friend and adviser “Frank", while he was growing up in Hawaii. Obama's friend has been identified as Frank Marshall Davis, a member of the old Moscow-controlled Communist Party USA. Obama’s communist connection adds to mounting public concern about a candidate who has come out of virtually nowhere, with a brief U.S. Senate legislative record, to become the Democratic Party frontrunner for the U.S. presidency.”

4,000 Americans dead and over 600,000 Iraq people dead. Why didn't Bush go after Bin Laden in Afghanistan where he was hiding? Why did he take the attention off Afghanistan where Al Qaeda was? Why didn't he take action when he knew the terriorists were going to attack the US? The facts can't be ignored. Iraq had the oil Bush and his cronies wanted and we are dying so they can make huge profits. It's criminal.

If there was governement healthcare WE WOULD BE PAYING FOR IT IN TAXES! Im not saying the government spends money wisely but have you gone to Salem?? In order to make "Change" then do it at the State level. Gov. Kulengoski makes a bad decesion and what do you do? Blame Bush. Take a close look at what Gov. Kulengoski, Wyden and like are up to.

As An Iraqi Freedom VET it eats me ALIVE to hear ANYONE say we went to war for oil. DID NOT HAPPEN. Get your facts straight. We went to Iraq to end terrorism. Terrorism started in Iraq and Afganistan. That is why we are there. The Iraqi Insurgants wanted me dead when I was there along with every other American.

Do yourselves and Oregon a favor. Write your govenor and senators and turn this State RED!

I wanted to distance myself from the hateful divisive talk coming from the right-wing commentators like Rush and Fox News. When we stop for a moment and really listen to what the other person is saying often we find that we aren't that far apart. If we stop allowing the media to divide us we can make change happen in this country.

Maybe if he had spent a little less time skirt chasing and a little more time focusing on his job he could have made smarter choices for our country.
You know I have really enjoyed reading over everyone's points here and some of the postings got me thinking a little harder about this election and here is what I came up with:
1. No a person doesn't have to salute the flag, or say the pledge of alliegence, or wear a pin honoring our troops. But if they don't what is that teaching our children about what it means to be American? What is that saying to all of our soliders and veterans and their families?
2. A person should not be weighed or evaulated on their religious beliefs but they almost always are.
3.It is okay if you don't support the war, but understand that their are still a whole lot of families that have lost a loved one or have a loved one over there and do not disregard their sacrifices.
4. I never want to be one of those uber political types that never have anything positive to say about anyone and all they remember are the things someone did wrong. So I will say this hopefully the next four years will bring change and that change will be for the better good of America as a whole and not see the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfield did nothing! Why? They were the ones in charge on 9/11 not Bill Clinton. They had the warnings and did NOTHING and a Republican lead Congress and Senate did nothing for 6 years to assess why and what happened. Yet, Bill Clinton gets all the blame. This doesn't make sense. He wasn't in office when 9/11 occurred - he didn't have the authority to order any counter measures. Why didn't Bush? Did he need a reason to ramp up fear in the American people for a war in Iraq that had been in the planning prior to 9/11? Why would someone who has been listening to this preacher for so long, want to be president of such bad people.???? So he could pay us back for all the bad things we have done to the black people. If those black people would think about what is happening in Africa now, they should be praising God that someone brought their ancestors over here (and a lot of the people that brought them over here, were other black people) and that they are here now, because of those ancestors who were brought here, for whatever reason. It is saving them from machete weilding killers and starvation, sickness, etc. etc. that is going on in Africa now. I would say to all the black people that think it is so bad here, they are welcome to go back to Africa, I bet someone would buy them a ticket even. I wonder if Obamas preacher friend would leave this country if he had the chance, I bet not....
Most people would not continue going to a church and listening to so much hate when they could try the church down the street and hear a preacher actually preaching love for one another and love of his country. No country is perfect but I bet this country is so much better than any other one in the whole world, and I personally am offended by all the hate for this country that Obamas preacher is shown to feel all over TV this past week.

http://skeptically.org/thinkersonreligion/id9.html

http://www.sullivan-county.com/nf0/dispatch/fathers_quote2.htm

among those quotes.....

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god." - Thomas Jefferson (letter to Peter Carr, 10 August 1787)

Every man "ought to be protected in worshipping the Deity according to the dictates of his own conscience." - George Washington (Letter to the United Baptist Churches in Virginia in May, 1789)

"I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of... Each of those churches accuse the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all."- Thomas Paine (The Age of Reason, 1794-1795.)

"The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.'' - James Madison (Original wording of the First Amendment; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).)

As you can see, quite a variety of beliefs were held. People should consider these quotes of the founding fathers when voting, also.

That runs counter to all military protocol and the last thing that we as a country want to do is send a strong message to the enemy that we are giving up. We need to eventually get out but not till the job is finished. One thing that all of us must realize is that Nov is still a ways away and that many peoples opinions change before the time comes to cast the deciding ballot. I believe that many in this election are going to be writting in their choice if anything because if you look at the nations opinions before all of the candidates that dropped out, we were pretty split in many different directions. I believe the reason that Obama is getting the support that he is getting right now is because many are tired of the lies that GW Bush told to us and they will vote for anybody that talks about change. For what it is worth, the only thing that is going to change is the Butt that sits in the chair in the Oval Office. Every election we usually vote for one party to take the White House and the oposing party to take the House and the Senate. yes, we want all of them to work together, but the reality of it is they will not and it will be the business as usual norm that we are all watching today. Our country was founded by Christians and I think that should considered when voting. Traditions should never be axed or pushed aside for the purpose of acceptance.

I pledge allegiance [to the American flag] and lead the pledge of allegiance sometimes in the United States Senate when I'm presiding." Mr Obama is a member of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ and is an actively practising Christian.
Shame on The World for perpetuating smear tactics and low-rent innuendo! I hope you print the truth to balance this attack to be fair.

GRANT: Only to the Secular Progressives does a sep of church and state exists.

Read your history it is clearly stated on many occasions there is no seperation of church and state except in the minds of S and P's.

On that note, Obama has ZERO traits of a Muslim. Muslims for the most part are nearly fanatic in their beliefs. TO secretly be anything else but Muslim violates the teachings of the KORAN and therefore he would be terminated by Muslim clergy in the town square.

Are you saying we should bring his religious beliefs into debate? Or are you saying that you fear the fact that he is the offspring of an islamic father? Either way, isn't that anti-american? After all, there is a little thing called sep. of church and state.
