Alumni Notes: Jasmer swims to individual Pac-10 title

Former North Bend High School standout Kim Jasmer won her first individual Pac-10 title when she took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4 minutes and 41 seconds at the conference meet.
She was only the second female swimmer in University of Washington history to take a Pac-10 title. In doing so, she qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. She also will compete on the 200 freestyle relay at the NCAAs after that squad took fifth place in 1:30, breaking the previous school record, set in 2003. The Women’s NCAA Championships will be held March 20-22 in Columbus, Ohio.
Johnston honored
Former Myrtle Point star Amanda Johnston was honored with the Cascade Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year award for the Oregon Tech women’s basketball team. After transferring from Umpqua Community College, Johnston averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Owls who finished the season with a 23-9 record — tying Tech’s season high for wins.
Tribble earns honors
Former Coquille High School basketball standout Monique Tribble was selected to the NWAACC South Region second team following her sophomore season for the Clackamas Cougars. Tribble also earned NWAACC All Academic honors. She started 29 of the team’s 30 games and played more then 795 total minutes. Tribble led the Cougars’ in field-goal percentage at 53.9 percent, and rebounds with 242, and was second in points scored with 416. Clackamas finished with a 19-11 overall and 8-5 in conference play. In the Cougars’ final game of the NWAACC Tournament, Tribble showed what a dominant force she is in the paint, finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds and nine blocked shots, which broke her own previous school record of seven.
Lane basketball
Former South Coast standouts Lacy Looney and Alysha Moore contributed to a solid Lane Community College women’s basketball team that finished 29-4 overall and took third at the NWAACC Tournament. Both Looney and Moore saw minutes in a recent playoff win over Grays Harbor where the final score was 91-32. Looney had one assist, two steals and two points during her three-minute run. While Moore also had an assist along with two rebounds, two steals, and a free throw during her four minutes.
NNUbasketball
Former North Bend High School basketball star Janee Olds has adapted to her role on the Northwest Nazarene women’s basketball team this season. Though she has only started in five games for the Crusaders, Olds has still managed to lead the team from beyond the arc with 33 made treys, as well as from the free-throw line where she has shot 84 percent thus far. With an average of more than nine points per game, Olds also has managed to accumulate 42 steals on the year. Northwest Nazarene is 17-8 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
SOU hoops
Former Bandon High School standout Trenton Fraser concluded his sophomore season on the Southern Oregon men’s basketball team averaging 9.8 points per game for the Raiders, while shooting 88 percent from the free-throw line. The Raiders finished the season with a 10-19 record overall and 6-13 in conference play. Former Coquille standout Matt Pizzola also played for Southern Oregon, though his minutes were limited.
George Fox basketball
Former Brookings-Harbor standout Mark Metzler started every game of the season for the men’s basketball team at George Fox University. Metzler concluded his senior season averaging more the 28 minutes per game for the Bruins while leading the team in rebounds with 126, and blocked shots with 13. The Bruins finished the year with a 9-16 record overall and 5-11 in conference play.
Green sets school record
Former North Bend High School standout Denise Green concluded her freshman season of Boise State swimming in dramatic fashion. Green helped lead the Broncos to a seventh-place finish at the Western Atlantic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, which tallied 243 total points. Green took first place in her heat of the 200-meter backstroke in 2:05 — a new school record. She also competed on the 400-meter freestyle relay that placed eight in a time of 3:32, which broke the previous school record by five seconds.
Oklahoma golf
Former Siuslaw High School standout Jesse Schutte is continuing his success on the Oklahoma University men’s golf team. At the 13th-annual University of Texas San Antonio Intercollegiate, Schutte placed 18th, carding scores of 70, 74 and 77, to help the team earn a third-place finish. Two weeks later, the Sooners traveled to Westlake Village, Calif., for the USC Collegiate Invitational, where they placed ninth overall and beat three ranked squads, including No. 3 UCLA. Schutte finished the match in a tie for 45th place.
Vaughn makes debut
Former Reedsport Brave Aubrey Vaughn has officially begun her career on the Portland State University women’s golf team. Vaughn redshirted the 2006-07 season but is quickly picking up where she left off in high school. Recently she helped the team to tie for a 10th place finish overall at the Red Rock Invitational, where she placed 65th. Next the Vikings will be heading to Eugene for the Duck Invitational on March 24 and 25.
Oregon golf
Former Marshfield High School golf standout Jordan Sweet has taken his game to the University of Oregon this year. In late October, Sweet competed as an individual at the Husky Invitational where he placed 66th — scoring 82 in both rounds. The men’s team returns several members from last year which has limited Sweet’s overall playing time.
McKenna wins matches
Former North Bend High School tennis star Kelcy McKenna has begun her spring season for the Arizona State University women’s tennis team. McKenna and doubles partner Micaela Hein won their No. 3 doubles match 8-0 as the No. 13 Sun Devils defeated UC Santa Barbara. McKenna also won her singles match in three sets. |
