Lakers have strong start to track season

Francesca Frasier started the spring track season with a bang for Southwestern Oregon Community College, setting a school record in the Artie Sullivan Invitational at Southern Oregon University last Saturday.
Frasier set a new school record in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 11 minutes and 12.10 seconds. The record was previously held by Jessica Pidgeon who set it in 2005. Frasier placed second to SOU’s Ixal Sanchez who ran a 10:56.61.
Frasier had another second-place finish in the 800 meter with a time of 2:39.88.
The Southwestern women’s 4x100 relay team, consisting of Kamish Abram, Jasmin Scott, Arianne Smith and Illy Ayala, won its race with a time of 53.50.
Scott, Abram and Ayala came in first, third and fourth in the 100 meters with times of 13.65, 14.20 and 14.52.
Abram had another third place finish in the long jump, getting a distance of 15 feet, 5 inches. Scott was fourth with a 15-3.
Ayala was third in the 200 meters with a time of 29.84.
Smith ran a 17.19 in the 100 high hurdles for third place.
Also placing first for Southwestern was Kasey Orr in the high jump, reaching a mark of 5 feet.
Ernest Rickett had three great finishes for Southwestern’s men, winning the 400 meter dash (50.91) while placing second in the 200 meter dash (23.21) and the 100 meter dash (11.56).
Rickett, along with Justin Gannon, Sammy Young and Pat Fennimore, placed second in the men’s 4x100 relay with a time of 45.80.
Young and Fennimore placed second and third in the men’s 110 hurdles with times of 16.27 and 17.23, respectively. Fennimore had another third-place finish in the long jump (20 feet) as well as a second-place in the triple jump (43-6). Gannon was fifth in the triple jump (40-7).
Southwestern’s Paul Guffy won the javelin with a throw of 173-3, while Gannon finished just behind him with a throw of 153-6.
Garrett Fischer nabbed a pair of thirds in the shot put (43-71⁄2) and the discus throw (132-6).
“Overall, the squad did very good for its first outing,” said Southwestern coach Dan Neal. “We now know what to work on and look forward to Mount Hood this weekend.”
