PORTLAND — Revenge was sweet for Jefferson.
The top-ranked Lady Democrats (26-0) used a strong second half to defeat No. 3 Willamette 55-44 in the semifinals of the OSAA Class 5A girls state championships.
It was a rematch of last year’s semifinals, when the Wolverines topped the Lady Democrats 64-45 and went on to defeat Churchill 45-29 in the championship.
Nyesha Sims led Jefferson with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tyrisha Blake finished with 10 points and nine rebounds and Janita Badon added 13 points for the Lady Democrats.
Willamette (26-2) got a strong effort from Katie Collins, who finished with 17 points. Ashley Smith finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Wolverines.
Jefferson went into halftime up 25-22. The Lady Demos shot 12-for-44 (27 percent) in the first half, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds. The Wolverines only attempted 18 shots, making seven.
Jefferson opened it up in the third, holding the Wolverines to six points in the quarter. Sims came up with a steal and converted a layin on the fast break late in the period to extend the Lady Demo lead to 38-28.
Jefferson will take on No. 4 Hermiston (24-4) in the championship tonight at the Chiles Center.
Hermiston 83, Wilsonville 64
Shoni Schimmel put on a show in the semifinals and No. 4 Hermiston beat No. 5 Wilsonville 83-64.
The 5-foor-9 sophomore guard finished with 31 points on 12-for-20 shooting to go with eight rebounds and eight assists. Schimmel displayed pinpoint passing and fancy dribbling to go with a pair of three-pointers from well beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs advance to their first state championship appearance in school history.
Hermiston (24-4) jumped out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter on a deep three-pointer by Schimmel. The Wildcats (23-4) chipped away at the lead and a pair of Kellie Krueger baskets in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter cut the Bulldogs lead to 32-28 going into halftime.
Melinda Ingalls led the Wildcats with 17 points.
Class 6A
Oregon City 52, Sunset 42
Sophomore Brittany Knighton scored 18 points to lead Oregon City to a 52-42 semifinal victory over Sunset in the OSAA Class 6A girls state basketball tournament on Friday.
With the victory, Oregon City advanced to the state title game for the 15th time. The Pioneers won 10 of those championship games, with the last coming in 2004.
The key in Friday’s game was the play of Knighton, a 6-foot sophomore post who was at her best playing on the perimeter. She hit four of seven 3-point shots and she was also a force on defense, where she blocked three shots.
Oregon City (23-3) had its hands full with a pesky Sunset team that finished third in the Metro League this season. Despite being the underdogs, the Apollos (19-9) held the lead eight times through the first 19 minutes of action.
Sunset’s last lead came at 27-26 when Alyssa Martin hit a long jumper with 5:37 left in the third quarter. The Pioneers then turned the game around with the help of a full-court press that has often spelled the difference for Oregon City’s tournament teams.
That pressure defense opened the door for an 11-point run that gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 37-27. The Pioneers, who hit 55.6 percent of their second-half shots, had five different players score during that run.
Southridge 39, Central Catholic 24
Southridge held Central Catholic to seven points or fewer in each quarter and earned a shot at its third straight state title with its semifinal win Friday night.
Southridge (23-4) led just 24-19 entering the fourth quarter, but pulled away for the win. Alex Earl had a game-high 17 points in the win.
Audrey Miller led the Rams, who shot just 21 percent for the game, with seven points.
Central Catholic (23-3) meets Sunset for third place today.
Class 4A
Sutherlin 42, Baker 39
Sutherlin outscored visiting Baker 14-8 in the fourth quarter to beat the Bulldogs 42-39 and advance to the state tournament in Corvallis.
Randi Kostner had a key steal and hoop with one minute to go to give Sutherlin a 41-38 lead.
Tess Bennett had 15 points and Amanda Hutchings added 11 for Sutherlin.
Ontario 58, Douglas 44
Ontario outscored visiting Douglas 18-9 in the third quarter to pull away for the win in the Class 4A playoffs.
Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvili had 23 points for the Tigers, who advanced to the state tournament, which starts Tuesday in Corvallis.
Katy King had 27 points for the Trojans.
