Clambake Jazz Festival

The 2008 Southcoast Clambake Jazz Festival continues through Sunday.

Featured bands will include the Boomer Band, Electric Park, Evolution, Igor’s Jazz Cowboys, It’s About Time, the Louisiana Joymakers and many more. See the complete jazz fest schedule in the related link.

College acting

Southwestern Oregon Community College

Southwestern  Oregon Community College’s presentation of playwright Sam Shepard’s “A Lie of the Mind” concludes tonight at 7 at the Coos Bay campus.

The play sets viewers right into the story of two rural families as the marriage that joins them is torn apart by a series of violent, yet comically mistimed events. It is a tale punctuated throughout by errant behavior: deep aphasia, dementia, domestic abuse and gunplay.

The play is on stage at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts, 1988 Newmark Ave. General admission is $8; seniors $6, with complimentary admission to students.

Romantic comedy

Theatre 101, Port Orford

Theatre 101 in Port Orford will present “Mixed Emotions” on stage at 7:30 tonight at the theater, 1320 Oregon St.

The romantic comedy centers around Christine Millman (Dianne Antonio) and Herman Lewis (Rick Antonio), who are widowers in their sixties. Before the deaths of their spouses, the couples had been friends. She is Catholic; he is Jewish. She is in the process of moving to Florida, when Herman shows up on her doorstep and suggests they get married.

There will be a Sunday performance at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Downtown Fun Zone, at the door, or by calling Theatre 101 at (541) 332-7529.

Karaoke

North Bend contest

North Bend Lanes will host the fourth-annual International Bowling Karaoke Contest at 7 tonight. The competition continues Saturdays at the bowling alley, 1225 Virginia Ave.

Theatrical drama

‘On Golden Pond’ in Bandon

Ernest Thompson’s classic drama, “On Golden Pond” plays at Bandon’s Sprague Community Theater through March 16.

The show, directed by Jason Tree, follows Norman and Ethel Thayer as they return to Golden Pond for the umpteenth summer. Their daughter Chelsea arrives with her fiance and his rebellious teenage son Billy (Dante Haruna). On an impulse, Chelsea asks if they can leave Billy on the pond with the oldsters while she and her boyfriend travel on to Europe. Norman and Ethel face old age and death while Billy is gearing up for life with all its excitements and emotional struggles.

Performances will be at 7:30 tonight and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $12 and $10 for students and seniors.

CB library hosts concert

Fiddle champion Jim Hockenhull returns to Coos Bay for a toe-tapping concert at 7 tonight in the Coos Bay Public Library’s Myrtlewood Room.

Hockenhull honed his back porch sound from Appalachian, Southeastern string band and bayou Cajun music.

The free program is sponsored by Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library. For more information, those interested can call 269-1101.

Air Force jazz ensemble

The U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West Commanders Jazz Ensemble will perform in a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay.

Folk music

Community sing-along

The South Coast Folk Society is inviting the community to a sing-along for vocalists of all ages and abilities at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Fiction 101 Books in the Tioga Building, 213 Broadway in downtown Coos Bay.

The “Rise Up Singing” songbooks have many kinds of songs, or participants can bring a song to share. Acoustic instruments are welcome. The singing will go to 6 p.m.

The Folk Society is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, study, teaching, enjoyment and continuing evolution of traditional and historical dance, music and song.

African dance

Music fest fundraiser

The Oregon Coast Music Association and Black Marke Gourmet present “Fools in Paradise” performing African dance music Sunday in downtown Coos Bay.  

The dinner/concert event will begin at 6:30 p.m.  at Black Market Gourmet, 495 Central Ave., with music starting at 7:30 p.m.

“Fools in Paradise” is a six-person band from the Portland area. Its members will perform African marimba music, and other world-beat music to get people dancing. The night will kick off with a traditional African dinner served by the Black Market. Dinner reservations are requested.
