The following events are scheduled in South Coast communities this week and next.

Friday

Senior computer club

Bay Area Seniors’ Computer Club will hold a regular meeting on Friday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m., and the meeting will start at 10. Refreshments will be available.

Margaret Wiggin, the club’s webmaster, will talk about the club’s Web site, as well as give a tour of it. 

Topics open for discussion will include how to navigate through the Web site, classes BASCC offers and finding help.

World prayer day

World Day of Prayer 2008, “God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding,” will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 2250 16th St., North Bend. All women are welcome.

The event is a worldwide ecumenical movement of women of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday of March. Each year a different country writes the worship service. This year, the WDP Committee of Guyana developed the theme, “God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding.”

The event is sponsored by the South Coast Unit of Church Women United.

American Legion

The American Legion will hold its annual Birthday Dinner, celebrating 89 years of service, on Friday at Bay Area Post No. 34, 1421 Airport Way, North Bend.

The social hour will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30. The cost is $10. All members and their guests are invited. Those with 50 years or more of membership will be honored.

American Legion Department Commander Ed Horne and American Legion Auxiliary Department President Ellie Buell will attend.

The theme is “Shore Leave.” Participants can dress in Hawaiian shirts or attire and enter the best Hawaiian shirt contest.

Friday, weekend

Coquille book sale

The Coquille Library Friends spring book sale will be held Friday through Sunday in the large auditorium at the Coquille Community Center, 115 N. Birch.

The friends only preview sale will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday.  Memberships will be available at the door. The open sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Paperback books will be 50 cents, and hardcover books will be $1. Proceeds will go the New Library Building Fund.

Port Orford water fest

The Port Orford Ocean Resource Team, along with Surfrider Foundation, is preparing for the town’s first-ever Water Festival 2008 on Friday and Saturday.

The event starts at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Savoy Theater. Oregon State University Professor Jane Lubchenco will be the keynote speaker, talking about her paper, “The Need for a New Ocean Ethic.” One of the Lubchenco’s primary research interests is marine reserves.

The all-day Saturday events begin with a starfish pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m., then continues with a fishing adventure and hatchery tour, a macro-invertebrate petting zoo, fish dissections, fish printing, a dock walk with a National Marine Fisheries Service observer, water testing, a blues jam, plankton races, movies, a fish fry and more.

Saturday

Textile art guild

The Heritage Textile Arts Guild will host “Beautiful Things from Rags” at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Space 157A of the Pony Village Mall in North Bend.

It will be presented and demonstrated by Eva Douthit and Katherine Cranston.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Wellness fair

Energy Healing will be the focus of the Wellness Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Unity by the Bay, 2100 Union Ave., North Bend.

Participants can learn about and experience energetic healing methods that will complement a current overall health program, a press release said. Several local practitioners will combine information and practice in sample sessions of therapeutic touch, reiki, tandem therapy and Quantum-Touch®. Demonstrations will include Jade Woman Qigong at 1:30 and 3 p.m.; and Jin Shin Jitsu at 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., practitioners and participants can gather in the sanctuary for closing circle. There is no charge for admission.

Dodge ball tournament

A dodge ball tournament will be held at the Bandon High School gym at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The tournament will consist of men’s, women’s and co-ed teams in adult and high school divisions. For more information, those interested can call Kathy Siemer at BHS, 347-4413.

Sunday

Head Start fundraiser

Bowling for Kids — a fundraiser for Head Start classrooms in Coos and Curry counties — will be held beginning at noon Sunday at North Bend Lanes Bowling Center, 1225 Virginia Ave. in North Bend.

Community members, families, businesses and individuals are invited to enter to win prizes or cheer from the sidelines. Each person or team will be required to provide a donation, which can be sponsored by a local business or individual or raised through personal contributions.

African dinner, dance

“Fools in Paradise” will perform African dance music in downtown Coos Bay this weekend in a fundraiser to benefit the Oregon Coast Music Association. 

The dinner/concert event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Black Market Gourmet, 495 Central Ave., with music starting at 7:30 p.m.

“Fools in Paradise” is a six-person band from the Portland area. Its members will perform African marimba music and other world-beat music to get people dancing. For reservation and ticket information, those interested can stop by Black Market Gourmet or call 269-0194. Tickets cost $55.

Week of March 10

Spring garden talk

The second-annual Spring Gardening Series will continue from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, with roses. Corinne Clifton will talk about the care of roses on the South Coast.

The series is being held at the Myrtlewood Room in the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave. This is a free event.
