Marine mammals will be the subject of the Shoreline Education for Awareness Inc. seminar on Saturday, March 8, at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology’s Boathouse in Charleston.
The presenter will be OIMB’s Dr. Jan Hodder, a favorite on the local lecture circuit, according to a press release. Hodder attended the University of Liverpool in England, majoring in marine biology, and received her doctoral degree from the University of Oregon.
After a catered lunch, attendees will move to Simpson Reef Overlook for a field trip with Hodder to observe through spotting scopes marine mammals in their natural habitat.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with coffee and socialization, and the presentation will begin at 9 a.m. Each seminar is $5 per person (free for SEA members). The catered lunch costs an additional $6 per person, or attendees can bring their own lunch. The lunch consists of a choice of meat or vegetarian sandwich plus fruit, chips, coffee, tea or water.
Memberships cost $20 per year for individuals and $35 for a family of two or more.
The seminars are designed to train those who want to become docents for the spring/summer interpretive season at Coquille Point in Bandon and Simpson Reef Overlook on Cape Arago, just beyond Shore Acres State Park, and to serve as a refresher course for returning docents. However, anyone who loves the outdoors and wildlife is welcome to attend and learn more about both along the shoreline, according to the release.
Those attending should park along Boat Basin Drive, across from OIMB. Later in the season, there will be some on-site training to teach nuts-and-bolts information and increase comfort levels for those reluctant to become docents because they are uncomfortable speaking one-on-one.
SEA welcomes new members to the nonprofit organization formed 18 years ago in Bandon, and invites any interested members of the public as well as returning docents to attend all of the monthly seminars.
For more information, those interested can call Bill Binnewies, SEA president, at 260-7770; or Sara Duvall, vice president, at 347-9234; or e-mail either at
