South Coast gardeners are invited to learn about wildflowers, vegetables and herbs, vermicomposting and more at the Coos County Master Gardener Association annual “Fertilize Your Mind” gardening workshops.

The Master Gardeners and Oregon State University Extension Service are sponsoring day-long seminar on Saturday, March 29, at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay. The event is offering practical, hands-on learning for home gardeners.

Ten speakers will present classes covering a wide range of horticultural interest. There also will be information-packed displays are available for study all day.

Keynote speaker

The presenters will include author Phyllis Gustafson, keynote speaker. Gustafson co-authored “Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest,” and that will be the title for her speech this month. The keynote talk will be from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. The other speakers will make their presentations in three concurrent sessions, each lasting an hour and 15 minutes, from 10:45 a.m. through 4 p.m.

Other presenters and their topics will include:

• Jardin Kazaar — cooking with herbs and fresh vegetables

• Jennifer Ewing — native plants in the home landscape and

seeds and seed-saving

• Mary Torres — how to plant and care for a hanging basket

• Linda White — growing raspberries

• Bob Denman (Red Pig Tools) — hand-forged garden tools and their uses

• Carol See — mason bees

• Steve Schmidt — ornamental grasses

• Liza Ehle — greenhouses & waterwise gardening

• Coos County Compost Specialists — vermicomposting

The registration fee is $25 and includes the keynote speech, lectures and a snack at morning break.
