Get the dirt on backyard gardening
Wednesday Coos Bay Garden Club“So Many Ways to Share Your Garden” is the topic for this week’s meeting of the Coos Bay Garden Club.
Using products from the garden and loads of creativity, Jean Willenberg and Laurie Martin will demonstrate how to craft cards and critters from flowers, vegetables and fruit.
The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

Thursday Rose SocietyThe Southwestern Oregon Rose Society will hold a meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the North Bend Housing Authority, 1700 Monroe Ave.
The meeting will include tips for growing roses in the different areas of Coos County.

Marshfield choir concertMarshfield High School vocal groups New Horizons, Beachcombers, Concert Choir and Chorale invite the community to a concert this week.
The members will perform in the Marshfield Spring Vocal Concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the MHS auditorium, on 10th Street and Ingersoll Avenue in Coos Bay. The cost will be $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students, and $5 for families.

Quilting clubThe Coos Sand ‘N’ Sea Quilters will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. The March program will be about sewing scraps and what to do with them.
Participants can bring ideas and actual items made using scraps, both fabric and batting. Participants also can bring extra scraps to donate to satellite quilting groups to use for charity quilts. Doors open at 6 p.m. for coffee and camaraderie.

Genealogy clubThe Coquille Valley Genealogy Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the meeting room of the Flora M. Laird Memorial Library, 435 Fifth St., in Myrtle Point.
The speaker for the evening will be Dale Hoffman. Hoffman’s forefathers were among the first five settlers in the upper Coquille Valley area. The Hoffman Wayside State Park is a part of his heritage.
Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served.
Friday American LegionThe American Legion will hold its annual Birthday Dinner, celebrating 89 years of service, on Friday at the Bay Area Post No. 34, 1421 Airport Way, North Bend.
The social hour will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30. The cost is $10. All members and their guests are invited. Those with 50 years or more of membership will be honored.
American Legion Department Commander Ed Horne and American Legion Auxiliary Department President Ellie Buell will attend.
The theme is “Shore Leave.” Participants can dress in Hawaiian shirts or attire and enter the best Hawaiian shirt contest.

Saturday CHS Project GraduationCoquille High School’s Project Graduation will hold its annual dinner/auction on Saturday in the cafeteria, 499 W. Central Ave.
The doors will open at 5 p.m., and dinner, catered by Tai’s Dynasty, will be served at 6. The auction will start at 7. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Mr. RHSThe Mr. RHS contestants will be washing cars and trucks at the Umpqua Bank on Winchester Avenue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Children’s Miracle Network will receive 100 percent of the proceeds to support the neonatal unit at Sacred Heart Hospital and other health programs serving the children of this region.

Business resource fairThe South Coast Employer Council will host a South Coast Business Resource Fair to provide small or start-up businesses with resources and tools that they may not know are available to them.
The fair will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at the North Bend Community Center, 2222 Broadway St.
At the free event, tables will be set up with representatives of governmental services available to answer questions pertinent to maintaining or opening a business.
A panel presentation will be given by the Oregon Employment Department, the Oregon Department of Revenue and the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services.

Radio-controlled fliersThe Bay Area R/C Fliers will have an annual Spring Mall Show on Saturday and Sunday at the Pony Village Mall, in North Bend. The show will be open during regular mall hours.
There will be about 40 radio-controlled airplanes on display, as well as a People’s Choice Contest. Club members will be available to answer questions and talk about airplanes and the hobby.

Youth pow wowA youth pow wow will be held on Saturday with grand entry at 1 and 6 p.m., at the North Bend High School gymnasium, 2323 Pacific Ave.
Master of ceremonies will be Matt Ruff. Victor Frye will be the whip man, and the Coyote Singers will be host drum.
There will not be any display, sale or trade of protected species or pipestone. This is an alcohol-, drug- and tobacco-free event.

Week of March 10 WorkNetAre you looking for motivated workers?
WorkNet might be the place to find them on Wednesday, March 12. WorkNet will be hosted this month by Inland Point Assisted Living, located at 2290 Inland Drive, North Bend. WorkNet is a live forum where employers announce job openings and job seekers highlight their skills and abilities.

League of Women VotersCoos County Clerk Terri Turi will speak about the 2008 election at the League of Women Voters of Coos County at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, at Sozo Tea and Coffee, 1955 Union Ave., in North Bend.
Turi will talk about voting security and the latest changes in Oregon voter registration: 17-year-olds now can register to vote. Their forms will be put in a pending status and will become active when they turn 18. Also, there is a new alternate format ballot available for people with disabilities for the primary election.
A buffet breakfast will be $10.

Fuzzy Butt horse showThe Fuzzy Butt horse show, a Coos County Fair and Rodeo Queen benefit show, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 15-16.
Sign up will begin at 8 a.m., and the show will begin at 9 at Family Four Stables, 61672 Family Four Road off U.S. Highway 101 about six miles south of Coos Bay.

Anonymous HIV testsThere will be free, anonymous HIV testing from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, at South Coast Hospice, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay. There will be no needles, and results will be available in 20 minutes. No appointment is necessary.
Testing is encouraged for people who have had any kind of unprotected sex; shared needles for drugs, tattoos, body piercing or steroids; or had a sexually transmitted disease.

Week of March 17 Dance clubSets in Order Square and Round Dance club will host a St. Patrick’s Day Round Dance Party with Jim and Denise Harris from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 21, at the Coquille Community Center. New dancers are welcome.
