The following events and activities are scheduled in coming weeks on the South Coast.

Wednesday

Marshfield choir concert

Marshfield High School vocal groups New Horizons, Beachcombers, Concert Choir and Chorale invite the community to a concert this week.

The members will perform in the Marshfield Spring Vocal Concert at  7 p.m. on Thursday at the MHS auditorium, on 10th Street and Ingersoll Avenue in Coos Bay. The cost will be $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students, and $5 for families.

Saturday

Community concert

Coos County Community Concert Association will present The Poulenc Trio, featuring gifted virtuosos oboist Vladimir Lande, bassoonist Bryan Young and pianist Irina Lande, on Saturday.

The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Marshfield High School auditorium at the corner of 10th Street and Ingersoll Avenue in Coos Bay.

Season tickets for the concert series still are available at $55 for adults and $35 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the office of Mike Gordon: 290 S. Fourth Street, Coos Bay, or by calling 269-1272. A limited number of tickets for individual concerts may be available at the door. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:50 p.m.

NBHS fundraiser

The North Bend High School senior parent committee will hold a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the North Bend Middle school multi-purpose room.

All proceeds will go to the special events for the 2008 graduates, including the Safe & Sober all-night party.   

Donations can be dropped off after 4 p.m. on Friday, at the school multi-purpose room, or those interested can call Christy Alexander for pick up 888-3047.  

SMART fundraiser

The Bandon Start Making a Reader Today program will hold a Read-athon fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Ocean Crest Elementary School gym, the Read-athon is a major fundraiser for the program.

People of all ages interested in supporting the fundraising effort can sign up to gather pledges and read on that day (silently or to a group of children), or make a donation. Refreshments will be served.

Fiddle concert

Fiddle champion Jim Hockenhull returns to Coos Bay for a toe-tapping concert at 7 p.m., Saturday in the Coos Bay Public Library’s Myrtlewood Room.

Hockenhull honed his back porch sound from Appalachian, Southeastern string band and bayou Cajun music. Whether it is wrung from fiddle, guitar, banjo or squeezed from an accordion, this music is just fun, a press release said.

The free program is sponsored by Friends of the Coos Bay Public Library. For more information, those interested can call 269-1101.

Week of March 10

MHS bands on stage

 The Marshfield High School bands will be performing a concert at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 11, in the historic Marshfield auditorium, 10th Street and Ingersoll Avenue, in Coos Bay.

The symphonic and jazz bands will perform under the direction of Mr. Michael Miller. Admission to the concert is free.

CHS actors present play

Coquille High School Drama will present “The Very Great Grandson of Sherlock Holmes” the weekend of March 14-15.

The show will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 14, at the Sawdust Theatre, on the corner of First and Adams streets in Coquille. It will be repeated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.

The doors will open a half hour prior to the start of the show.  Admission is free, but donations will be accepted and used to support the drama program at Coquille High School.

Week of March 17

Reedsport social

A Potluck Social will be held at noon on Wednesday, March 19, at the Lower Umpqua Community Center. There will be bingo at 1 p.m. along with cards, pool, food and more.

In April

Hospice training

South Coast Hospice is inviting people interested in helping the organization to sign up for Spring Volunteer Training.

The 11-week program will be offered from 1 to 3:50 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting April 1, at the Community Bereavement Center, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

The class will explore death and dying, compassionate communication, stress relief, boundaries, feelings surrounding the dying process, grief and loss, active listening, serving unconditionally, cultural differences, spiritual and emotional wellness. There is no charge, unless the training is taken for college credit through Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Elam art show

The works of artist South Coast artist Jessica Elam are on display at Evergreen Court, 451 O’Connell St., in North Bend.

Elam’s pieces include a range of styles from textured pointillism, to floral depictions, nature and landscapes. The show runs through March 16.
