Douglas seized the Far West League’s No. 2 seed for the Class 3A girls state basketball playoffs by beating North Bend 34-30 on Thursday at Reedsport.

Because the teams tied for second in the final league standings, they broke the tie on the neutral floor.

The Trojans earned a first-round bye in the playoffs, before traveling to top-ranked Ontario next Friday for a spot in the state tournament.

North Bend, meanwhile, must win twice on the road to reach the tournament, starting with a game Tuesday at Marist, the third seed from the Sky-Em League. The winner of Tuesday’s game visits Capital Conference champion North Marion next Friday for a tourney berth.

North Bend coach Mike Forrester took a philosophical approach after the game.

“You take the hand that’s dealt you and make the best of it,” Forrester said.

North Bend played much better than it had last Friday, when the Trojans won on the Bulldogs’ home floor to force the tie for second place.

“We played hard,”he said. “I thought we played a solid game.”

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Trojans came up with the big shots in the final quarter.

Amanda McMillan tied the score for the Bulldogs twice in the final quarter — first with a layin and then with a pair of free throws — but with just under two minutes to go, Katy King had a rebound hoop to give Douglas the lead for good. The Bulldogs had several chances to tie the score or take the lead, but couldn’t convert and King clinched the victory with two free throws with 20 seconds to go.

King finished with 13 points and Stacia Blankenship had 10.

“Stacia hurt us in the first half and King hurt us in the second,” Forrester said.

Brooke Davison had a game-high 16 points for North Bend, while Megan Meador had eight and McMillan added six. No other players scored for North Bend.

The Far West League boys playoffs start tonight when Siuslaw visits Sutherlin.

The winner of that game travels to North Bend on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest to determine the league’s No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

Admission both nights is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
