PORTLAND (AP) — A priest and a friend died and the priest’s brother was missing and presumed dead after their boat capsized while they were crab fishing near the mouth of the Columbia River.
The bodies of the Rev. James Nibler, 54, a priest at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Newberg, and Curtis Heurer, 52, of Newberg were found Saturday, according to the Coast Guard.
One of the bodies was recovered after washing up on the spit near Hammond, and the other was found tangled in the anchor line when the Coast Guard crews righted the 16-foot aluminum boat, said Petty Officer Ronnie Mason with the Coast Guard in Astoria.
Nibler’s brother, Lawrence, 64, also of Newberg, was missing, officials said.
A search was suspended after six hours. Survival under the conditions was four hours at best, according to the Coast Guard.
