Folk musician Joe Craven will be on stage at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Port Orford Community Building on 11th Street.  

Sponsored by Port Orford Arts Council, the concert should please music lovers, adventurous people, those with a sense of humor, and anyone who likes surprises, a press release said. Tickets cost $10 at the door.

Beginning in high school as a rock band guitarist, Craven took up mandolin at the University of South Carolina where he earned a degree in museology and aesthetics.

Craven has been a sideman with the David Grisman Quintet since 1989 and played with Jerry Garcia, Stephane Grapelli, Mark O’Connor, and the Turtle Island String Quartet, among others. He has contributed to commercials, soundtracks, computer games and the 2001 film “Grateful Dawg.”

He has done extensive research in folk music from the United States and other countries. The Joe Craven Trio performs nationally, promoting Camptown, a collection of traditional fiddle tunes set to rhythms and instrumentation from around the world. Craven’s love of music and sound and his ability to play many different instruments has led him into exploration of everyday objects and the sounds he finds in them, including car dashboards, squeeze toys, empty bottles and his head. He will do outreach workshops in Port Orford/Langlois schools Tuesday.

“Music is about expression, imagination and living in the creative spirit,” Craven said. “It’s not the thing, but the process of how you connect with it that makes great music.”
