Pacific Islanders Club meets on Sunday

The newly formed Pacific Islanders Club will hold its second aloha gathering on Sunday.

About 40 people from Hawaii, Samoa, the Philippines, and other Pacific Islands showed up for the first meeting last fall. New members are welcome.

The event will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at Alder Acres RV Park Club House, 1800 N. 28th Court, which is off Ocean Boulevard just east of K-Mart in Coos Bay.

Those who plan to attend are encouraged to bring a ukulele, guitar or a hula CD to share that special island spirit.

Students to sing at Gloria Dei recital

A student vocal recital will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

The recital will feature David A. Aakre’s students, including Koree Dean, Alicia Johnson, Rachel Sheldon, Amanda Waldrop, Amy Nelson, Jamey Moriarty, Sara Martin, Talitha McClary, Jacob Adamson, Alyssa Birrer, Koral Aakre, Kerry Oxford and Neville Cordell. The concert is free and open to the public.

Newspaper columnist featured at Lions Club

Register-Guard columnist Bob Welch will speak at the North Bend Lions Club at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Evergreen Court lower level dining room, 451 O’Conell, North Bend.

Lecture keeps bee-keeping group buzzing  

The Coos County Beekeepers, along with the Oregon State Beekeepers Association, will host a bee school from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at the Ohlsen Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.

Thom Trusewicz will teach the class, which will include a lecture and a limited equipment demo.

The cost is $10, and participants should bring a sack lunch.

Engineers’ group holds dinner and meeting

The Southwest Oregon Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Oregon would like to welcome all active and retired engineers, and those who have an interest in engineering issues in the Bay Area, to the next meeting of the Professional Engineers of Oregon. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Coquille Room at the Red Lion Hotel, 3131 N. Bayshore Drive, in Coos Bay. Dinner and scheduled presenters will follow. The speaker will be Ainslie Krans a retired petroleum geologist. The presentation will describe the various functions of drilling and producing oil and natural gas, including rig structures and down-hole tools, drilling operations and control, well casing design, cementing and perforation and swabbing.

Krans has a master’s degree in geology from the University of Oregon. Following his formal education, he worked for Mobil Oil for seven years in oil and gas exploration in Alaska and Libya, North Africa and for Getty Oil Company for two years in the Anadarko Basin in Oklahoma.

Krans subsequently was a geologist/geophysicist and self-employed partner of Ainslie Petroleum in Oklahoma City, according to a press release.

Diabetes events on tap at local hospital

Several diabetes events are held at the Bay Area Hospital each month. The hospital is located at 1775 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

* A free Question and Answer on Diabetes will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be Feb. 27.

* Free diabetes screening from 9 to 10 a.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month. The next screening will be Thursday, Feb. 28. Participants should have fasted for eight or more hours or two hours after the beginning of breakfast.

* A diabetes prevention class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 28. For more information and to RSVP, those interested can call 266-7928 and leave a message if there’s no answer.

* A diabetes education review class will meet on from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be on March 4; the topic will be the BAH kidney program. For more information and to RSVP, those interested can call 266-7928, and leave a message if there’s no answer.

* A free blood pressure clinic is offered from 9 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. It is sponsored by Bay Area Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers.

* A free diabetes support/talk group is held from 3 to 4 p.m. every Thursday. For more information those interested can call Linda Hicks at 266-7927.

* The Dos and Don’ts of Diabetes class is offered each month. The class is four sessions and days vary. The class is offered in two time slots, 2 to 4:30 p.m. or 6 to 8:30 p.m. For more information and to register, those interested can call 269-8349. The class is usually covered by insurance, and scholarships are available.
