Grand jury indicts mother of baby found in toilet

ST. HELENS (AP) — A St. Helens woman has been arrested on accusations she attempted to kill her baby after giving birth in a restroom on Valentine’s Day.
A Columbia County grand jury indicted Jennifer Annette St. John on charges of assault and attempted aggravated murder. District Attorney Steve Atchison said St. John was to be arraigned Friday.
Investigators say the 21-year-old left her daughter in a toilet at the Meadow Park Health and Specialty Care Center, where the woman worked as a certified nursing assistant.
Workers discovered the baby in the toilet water and revived her. The newborn recovered at Portland’s Legacy Emanuel Hospital and was released Wednesday into the care of foster parents.
St. John’s 3-year-old son is in state custody.
To prevent unwanted newborns from being abandoned or killed, Oregon passed the “Safe Place for Newborns” law in 2001. The law allows a parent to leave an infant that is 30 days old or younger with an employee of a medical facility or law-enforcement agency — no questions asked unless there are signs of abuse.
