Library features bird house art by CB man

Coos Bay wood artist Robert McHaney is exhibiting his “Gnome Homes and Gnome Birdhouses” in the lobby of Coos Bay Public Library.

McHaney designs and creates each item from locally found materials. Woods are hollowed out and used for the body of the homes. Moss, lichen, pinecones and pieces of driftwood become decorative accents.

McHaney has been a woodworker for eight years, and began making the whimsical “gnome homes” and birdhouses a few years ago after becoming disabled in an automobile accident. Unable to work, he developed his creations to occupy himself. Drawing upon his interests in the outdoors and woodland creatures and in fantasy, McHaney envisioned little people needing homes and so developed his diminutive gnome homes, a press release said.

The exhibit can be seen free of charge during regular library open hours. The library is located at 525 W. Anderson Ave. For more information, those interested can call the library at 269-1101.
