The following are events and activities scheduled Saturday on the South Coast.
The Military Officers of America Association will meet at noon at a location to be announced. Officers and former officers from any branch of the military are welcome. For more information and the location, those interested can call Jim Cawdrey, president, at 266-9332.
The Coquille Volunteer Fire Department’s 13th-annual pancake breakfast, featuring pancakes, ham, eggs, juice and coffee, will be from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Fire Hall. The meal will cost $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10.
The Lower Umpqua Flycasters will sponsor the 18th-annual Flyfishing Expo from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Reedsport High School, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 101 and 22nd Street. The expo will feature lectures and demonstrations by experts in flyfishing, flytying, flycasting and conservation. Admission is free.
Author Janna Nickerson will share from her book “Eyes of War,” the first of the Fifth Battle Trilogy series, at 10 a.m. at Books By The Bay, 1875 Sherman Ave., downtown North Bend.
A free clothes giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lakeside Lions Hall, 890 Bowron Road.
The South Coast Striders will host a beach walk starting at 10 a.m. to the shipwrecks on the North Spit. Hikers will go to the New Carissa. The trip there and back is 4.2 miles. The energetic also will go on to visit to the “mystery shipwreck.” The total round trip distance to both wrecks is 7.76 miles. The hike is rated moderate to difficult. Waterproof boots will be needed. Hiking sticks and rain gear are recommended. Hikers also are reminded to bring water and something to eat. Participants should meet at the Bureau of Land Management’s Boat Ramp on TransPacific Lane.
A class on body awareness will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 438 Elrod Ave., in Coos Bay. Easy stretching, yoga postures, qi gung and tai chi will be incorporated into a smooth, gentle program focusing on balance, breathing and posture.
The Bayshore Fellowship Youth Group will hold a Recycle Fest from noon to 3 p.m. in the Bi-Mart parking lot at Broadway and Newmark streets in North Bend. The group will accept recyclable aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, ink and toner printer cartridges, and used cell phones. It is a drive-by service.
Chair Yoga, taught by Jevanna Toribio, will be offered from 1 to 2 p.m. at Unity by the Bay, 2100 Union St., North Bend. The class is designed with simple, easy exercises to relax and rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit, a press release said. It is open to everyone, regardless of yoga experience. There is no charge. Donations are appreciated.
The Coos Bay Public Library will offer a free “Booklovers’ Tour of the Internet” from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the library’s Myrtlewood Room, at the library, 525 Anderson Ave.
Hollywood Dreams is hosting a Valentine Party from 4 to 6 p.m. at North Bend Middle School, 1500 16th St. Admission is $2. Anyone with a developmental disability is welcome.
Coos Elderly Services will hold a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament and Casino Night event from 6 to 10 p.m. at the North Bend Community Center, on Broadway Street. Casino admission will cost $25, which includes $20 scrip, entertainment and snacks. Buy-in for the Texas Hold ‘Em tourney will be $50, which includes casino entry, $3,000 in chips and $20 funny money. For more information, those interested can call 756-1202.
The All Girl Impromptu Pick Up Band will play at 6:30 p.m. at Rogers Zoo, 2037 Sheridan Ave., in North Bend. The band plays a variety of hard-driving Celtic jigs and reels, European and American folk tunes. There is no cover charge.
The fourth-annual Lighthouse School Fundraiser “Disco Inferno — Burn, Baby, Burn” begins at 7 p.m. at the Sawmill convention center, next to the Autumn House restaurant, 3491 Broadway St., North Bend. There will be dinner and dancing to the tunes by D.J. Troy Woody, along with silent and live auctions. Funkadelic disco attire is encouraged. Tickets can be purchased for $45 each via the Lighthouse School, 93670 Viking Lane; or Books By The Bay, 1875 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
Dance lessons will be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bandon Grange Farwest Hall on state Highway 42 South, just east of U.S. Highway 101. A dance follows the lessons from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Those attending can wear casual clothing, and singles and couples are welcome. No smoking or alcohol is allowed. There is no charge but donations will be accepted. For more information, those interested can call 756-6998 or 347-5626.
