LOS ANGELES — Phil Mickelson held on long enough for Jeff Quinney to self-destruct on the back nine at Riviera, closing with a 1-under 70 to win the Northern Trust Open and complete an impressive collection of trophies in California and Arizona.
Lefty was steady down the stretch as Quinney faltered, and finished with a 12-under 272 to win by two shots for his 33rd career victory — 16 of those on the West Coast.
Quinney holed four straight putts outside 10 feet around the turn and briefly held the lead. However, he bogeyed three straight holes, and three-putted again from about 20 feet on the 17th for another bogey that allowed Mickelson to ease to the win.
Quinney finished with a final-round 71. British Open champion Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald each shot 68 and tied for third at 7 under.
Sorenstam wins tournament
KAHUKU, Hawaii — Annika Sorenstam won the season-opening SBS Open for her 70th LPGA Tour title and first since September 2006, birdieing two of the last three holes Saturday for a 3-under 69 and two-stroke victory.
The 37-year-old Swedish star finished with a 10-under 206 total.
Rookie Russy Gulyanamitta (68), Laura Diaz (70) and Jane Park (70) tied for second. Angela Park (69), the 2007 rookie of the year who was assessed a two-stroke penalty, and Japanese rookie Momoko Ueda (71) tied for fifth, three strokes back.
Hoch captures another win
NAPLES, Fla. — Scott Hoch made it back-to-back wins on the Champions Tour.
Hoch made an 8-foot birdie putt on the last hole of regulation for a final-round 68 to get in a four-way playoff at 14-under 202, then made another 8-footer on the first playoff hole to win The ACE Group Classic.
Tom Jenkins (70), Tom Kite (65) and Brad Bryant (65) had already made their pars before Hoch.
AUTO RACING
Stewart wins Nationwide opener
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Taking a page from Hendrick Motorsports’ strategy book, Tony Stewart outdueled Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch to win the season-opening Nationwide Series race Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.
“We worked with each other the whole race. That’s something that, you know, we’ve learned that from the Hendrick guys,” Stewart said. “And it just shows if you get two of these guys to work with each other, Kyle and I can — I think Kyle and I could have stayed up front all day no matter how many guys challenged.”
Saturday was the first time in 27 Nationwide races on the 2.5-mile Daytona oval that the pole-winner had won. The victory was two-time Sprint Cup champion Stewart’s third victory in the circuit formerly known as the Busch Series — all of them here.
Toyota took the top two spots, a day after getting the top four spots in the trucks race.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had won his first two races driving for Hendrick Motorsports, was third.
Bodine gets truck win
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — It took Todd Bodine 17 years to get his first victory at Daytona International Speedway.
Bodine held off a late push from Kyle Busch and Johnny Benson to win the season-opening truck race at Daytona on Friday night.
Bodine needed 34 tries at NASCAR’s most famous track to get to Victory Lane, winning the Chevy Silverado 250.
The 2006 Craftsman Truck Series champion passed Erik Darnell coming off pit road with about 13 laps to go, then stayed out front the rest of the way.
Busch finished second, followed by Benson, David Starr and Rick Crawford.

With the win, the 244th-ranked Nishikori is expected to move to a No. 122 ranking. The 18-year-old is the youngest player to win an ATP title since Lleyton Hewitt won Adelaide as a 16-year-old in 1998.
WTAto check backgrounds
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — WTA Tour players’ parents, agents, coaches and other entourage members must agree to allow criminal background checks if they want full access at tournaments. The new policy was to go into effect Monday, when events start in Doha, Qatar, and Bogota, Colombia. It’s part of a broader effort to protect players’ safety and security.
