Gold Beach’s boys and girls basketball teams both earned state playoff berths with wins in the third-place games at the Sunset Conference tournament on Saturday.
Gold Beach’s boys edged Glide 55-49, while Gold Beach’s girls beat Cascade Christian 49-33.
Both will open the playoffs on the road. The Panther girls face Valley Catholic on Friday night, while Gold Beach’s boys are at Regis on Saturday.
Glide had an early nine-point lead against the Panthers on Saturday, but Gold Beach battled back.
“We put on the press to get more active,” said Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross.
The Panthers caught up in the second quarter, and the teams battled back and forth throughout the second half.
Glide took a one-point lead late when Elliot Standish scored a three-point play, but Gold Beach responded, tying the game on a free throw by Logan Hockema.
Hockema put the Panthers in front with 1:23 to go and Hugo Treinen stole a Glide pass in the backcourt and was fouled. He hit both free throws to put Gold Beach up four. Then Todd Martin had a steal for the Panthers and Mackenzie Burdett added two more free throws with 51 seconds remaining. Martin added three more free throws to keep the Panthers in front.
Treinen finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, while Burdett added 10, Martin nine and Hockema and Mitch McDonald eight each.
Standish had 18 points for the Wildcats.
McDonald, who had two 3-pointers, said the Panthers didn’t panic when Glide jumped in front 18-11 after the first quarter.
“It was so early in the game,” he said. “We started playing harder defense and taking advantage of easy shots.”
Hockema said the Panthers knew they had nothing to lose.
“We knew if we didn’t win, we were going home,” he said.
Now the Panthers have another game to look forward to.
“It’s exciting,” McDonald said of the playoffs. “I don’t think we’ve been there in a while.”
Gold Beach’s girls have been in the playoffs nearly every year this decade. But none of the current players has reached the state tournament.
“The past three years, we lost in the game before the tournament,” said Gold Beach senior Emmie Yeiter, referring to losses to Central Linn, Willamina and Vale.
For a half Saturday, the Panthers looked like they might not get another playoff trip.
Cascade Christian led 23-19 at the half and by two points early in the second before Gold Beach found its offense.
Katherine Zuber had back-to-back 3-pointers and a three-point play and Molly Hockema scored several inside baskets. The lead quickly grew, with Gold Beach outscoring Cascade Christian 23-4 in the third quarter, and the Panthers cruised to the win.
“We got the lead and we wanted to keep pushing it,” Zuber said.
The Panthers struggled on offense in the first half, but then started making their shots, she said.
Gold Beach’s defense was a constant.
“We played really good defense in the second half,” Yeiter said, noting that Cascade Christian scored just 10 points after halftime.
“(We know) the shots will come as long as we’re playing defense.”
Gold Beach coach Jim Hulslander said his team played a strong second half after struggling with foul trouble in the first half.
“I thought we hung tough,” he said.
Even though the Panthers face a tough road game against a top team, Hulslander is delighted his team gets to continue its season after tying for second in the league and losing to Coquille in the first round of the tournament.
With just two seniors — Yeiter and Tana Miller — the future is even brighter.
“I’m happy for the opportunity for the young kids and the seniors,” he said.
Zuber finished with 18 points and Hockema added 15 for the Panthers.
Kierstin Barlow led Cascade Christian with 12 points.
