The following events and activities are scheduled in the coming weeks on the South Coast.

Hospice taking signups for spring training

South Coast Hospice is inviting people interested in helping the organization to sign up for Spring Volunteer Training.

The 11-week program will be offered from 1 to 3:50 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting April 1 at the Community Bereavement Center, 1620 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

The class will explore death and dying, compassionate communication, stress relief, boundaries, feelings surrounding the dying process, grief and loss, active listening, serving unconditionally, cultural differences, spiritual and emotional wellness. There is no charge, unless the training is taken for college credit through Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Tickets on sale for orchestra in Reedsport

The Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra returns to Reedsport for its Winter 2008 concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, at the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport High School.

Half-price tickets ($5) are on sale at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank and at the Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce. Admission will cost $10 at the auditorium box office on the day of the event.

Although the orchestra is in its seventh season of bringing live music to communities along the Oregon Coast, this is only the second Reedsport appearance of the 40-member group. Cosponsored by the Coastal Douglas Arts and Business Alliance, the concert will feature works by well-known composers including Beethoven, Debussy, Granados, Grieg, Holst and Johann Strauss Jr. Featured soloists include French hornists Wilke Renwick and John Dodge, as well as tubist Dan McGraw

CB library hosts night of fiddle in March

Fiddle champion Jim Hockenhull returns to Coos Bay for a toe-tapping concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 8, in the Coos Bay Public Library’s Myrtlewood Room.

Hockenhull honed his back porch sound from Appalachian, Southeastern string band and bayou Cajun music. Whether it is wrung from fiddle, guitar, banjo or squeezed from an accordion, this music is just fun, a press release said.

Beekeeper class for the bee curious

The Coos County Beekeepers along with the Oregon State Beekeepers Association will host a bee school from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at the Ohlsen Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.

Thom Trusewicz will teach the class, which will include a lecture and a limited equipment demo.

The cost is $10, and participants should bring a sack lunch. 

Beekeepers and anyone curious about bees are welcome to attend. For more information, those interested can call Jane at 396-4106.

Toribio offering free yoga class at Unity

Jevanna Toribio will offer Chair Yoga from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Unity by the Bay, 2100 Union St., North Bend.

The free class is designed with simple, easy exercises to relax and rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit. It is open to everyone, regardless of yoga experience.  Donations are appreciated. For more information, those interested can call Toribio at 756-5790.

Youth group seeking  recyclables in fundraiser

The Bayshore Fellowship Youth Group will hold a Recycle Fest from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the Bi-Mart parking lot at Broadway and Newmark streets in North Bend.

The group will accept recyclable aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles, ink and toner printer cartridges, and used cell phones. It is a drive-by service; there’s no need to get out of the car.

Proceeds will fund a trip to Acquire the Fire youth rally in Portland and other activities.
