COQUILLE — Gold Beach captured the third seed for this week’s Sunset Conference tournament by beating Glide 62-44 in the league playoffs Wednesday at Coquille. The Wildcats, who were playing their third game in three nights, will be the No. 4 seed in the tournament, which starts Friday at Marshfield High School.
Gold Beach, Glide and Myrtle Point had finished in a three-way tie for third place and needed two games to break that tie. Glide beat Myrtle Point in the first game of the playoff on Tuesday at Reedsport. Gold Beach’s win Wednesday eliminated the Bobcats.
For the first half Wednesday, Gold Beach took advantage of Glide’s weary legs, building up a 34-13 halftime edge.
“Our first half wasn’t bad,” said Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross. “We moved the ball.”
Logan Hockema scored most of his 13 points in the early going, while Jeff Knox and Mitch McDonald hit a pair of 3-pointers.
In the second half, Glide came to life.
“The second half, they started hitting every shot they shot,” Ross said.
The Wildcats trimmed the deficit several times, cutting the advantage to 16 points heading to the fourth quarter and pulling a little closer several times with strong outside shooting.
But Gold Beach made 6 of 7 free throws in the final quarter to keep the lead secure.
Mackenzie Burdett had a team-high 14 points for the Panthers and Knox and McDonald had eight each.
Christian Clark had 11 points and Patrick Ridgley 10 for the Wildcats.
Glide coach Jeff Smith said he was a little disappointed with his team’s effort in the first half, and challenged the players to reach deep and play for pride in the second half, which the Wildcats did.
They couldn’t overcome the disadvantage of playing on three consecutive days, though, he said.
“The last two nights (wins over Reedsport and Myrtle Point), we played very good defense,” Smith said. “(Tonight) we were dead on our feet.”
Fortunately for the Wildcats, Tuesday’s win secured their spot in the league tournament, so Wednesday’s loss only impacted where the team is seeded.
“I’m real proud,” Smith said. “We’re a young team and we were picked to finish last in the league.”
In the league tournament Friday at Marshfield High School, Gold Beach and second-place Bandon play at 3:30 p.m., followed by the girls teams from Gold Beach and Coquille at 5. Glide’s boys face league champion Cascade Christian at 6:30 and girls champion Myrtle Point faces Cascade Christian at 8.
The winners of Friday’s games meet Saturday for the league’s top two seeds in the state playoffs. The losers Friday meet in what amounts to an elimination game. The time schedule is the same, but the girls play first on Saturday.
