On Feb. 5, an American soldier who died in Iraq was flown into Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend at 12:18 p.m. He was to be driven on the last leg of the journey to his hometown of Riddle. Waiting at the airport for the body of Joshua A. R. Young was not only his family, but many other Americans. Members of the Patriot Guard Riders and other veterans made a fine flag line while more than a 12 police vehicles and fire trucks waited to escort this grieving family. As the procession began, the U.S. Coast Guard lined the street and their helicopter flew slowly overhead.

I believe all involved felt honored to be part of this caravan. Joshua A. R. Young and his family were escorted by the Oregon State Police and the Sheriff’s Office deputies to the Douglas County line. Here, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Oregon State Police continued on with the family.

I just happened to pick this day to ride with a North Bend Police officer. It was a day I shall not forget. There to escort and show respect was Coos Bay, North Bend, Coquille and the Confederated Tribe Police departments. Along with the sheriff’s office, Oregon State Police, North Bend and Coos Bay Fire Departments, Coast Guard and the Patriot Guard Riders and other veterans who made up the flag line.
