Grant money available for cultural projects
The deadline for grant applications to the Coos County Cultural Coalition is Feb. 28.
Those planning a special project which reflects Coos County culture, history or heritage within the next twelve months can apply.

Egyptian to feature movies all weekend
Hollywood productions will light up the big screen at the historic Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay this weekend.
Brian O’Conner’s saga of “The Fast and the Furious” continues Friday evening with “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003). Stripped of his badge, O’Connor leaves LA for Miami to redeem himself.
The crime theme continues Saturday night with “The Sting” (1973), starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as to cons trying to bring down a crime boss.
If crime isn’t your thing, try “A Chorus Line” (1985), a musical about trying out for a musical that will play on Sunday.
Friday and Saturday shows start at 7 p.m., and Sunday shows start at 3 p.m. The box office opens one hour before showtimes. General admission is $4, $3.50 for seniors and those 12 and under, and $3 for members.

Spaghetti feed funds to aid Winchester Bay
The Winchester Bay community center will hold a spaghetti feed from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday.
The cost is $4.50 for adults, $3 for children under 12. The meal includes spaghetti (meat or vegetarian), green salad, garlic bread, drinks, and wine sold by the glass. Proceeds will benefit the roof repairs project. The community center is located at 642 Broadway Ave.
Bandon hospital district hosting health fair
Women of the South Coast are invited to the fifth-annual Women’s Health Day, hosted by Southern Coos Health District.
The day-long event will be held on Saturday at the Harbor Building in Old Town Bandon (formerly Harbor Hall), 325 Second St., S.E.
The theme is “Caring for Ourselves, Caring for Others” and speaks to the benefit of learning skills and accessing resources to help with caregiving and remembering to tend to ourselves as well, according to Southern Coos Hospital Community Health Education Coordinator Mary Kemp.
The event will feature talks by Oregon Health & Science University and Oregon State University visiting faculty, as well as local health providers, with the goal of proving education, inspiration and resources.
The pre-registration fee of $5 includes lunch, door prizes and the opportunity to take part in an auction that includes handmade items, gift certificates and art from local individuals and businesses.

Pianist to perform for dancers at Florence
The Florence Events Center will host singer/pianist Lindy Gravelle in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Gravelle, who performs throughout the Northwest, will play original songs as well as standards. For more information about the performer, those interested can visit http://www.lindygravelle.com.
This concert will be a cabaret style concert on the flat floor of the Events Center. Food and beverages will be available for purchase during the performance. Red Rose Catering will have a small plate menu and beverages. The cabaret room layout will include the dance floor.
Tickets cost $18 and can be purchased at the FEC box office from noon to 4:30 p.m. today and Friday, and from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the night of the performance. The Events Center is located at 715 Quince St.
Ballroom classes to begin in Bandon
A new session of ballroom classes will begin Saturday at MarLo Dance Studio. Sally Ford will teaching Rumba and American tango. Don Canavan will lead the Argentine tango class. The Saturday evening classes will run six weeks.

Drawer construction topic for woodworkers
The South Coast Woodworker’s Guild will gather at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, in the woodshop at Reedsport Junior/Senior High School, 2260 Longwood Drive.
The program will be “Cabinet Building Basics 101: Drawers.” Different types of drawers and suspension systems will be demonstrated, including dovetail joints- both machine and hand-made joints.
The group’s regular meeting was moved from the second to the third Thursday of the month to avoid conflicting with Valentine’s Day.

All-women folk band to entertain in NB
The All Girl Impromptu Pick Up Band will be playing at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Roger’s Zoo, 2037 Sheridan Ave., in North Bend.
The band, known as TAGIPUB, plays a variety of hard-driving Celtic jigs and reels, European and American folk tunes, and features fiddles, mandolin, concertina, hammered dulcimer, guitar, bass and autoharp and sometimes the accordion, penny whistle and harmonica. There is no cover charge.

Eckankar author to give talk in Florence
Local members of Eckankar will host “Lessons and Blessings,” a video of Sri Harold Klemp speaking at the 2006 Eckankar World Wide Seminar from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Bromley Room of the Florence library, 319 South Irby St.
Harold Klemp has authored more than 60 books and is known as a pioneer of “everyday spirituality,” a press release said. No donations are requested, and there is no obligation.

Coos Bay railroad museum seeks helpers
There are still trains in Coos County, at the Oregon Coast Historical Railroad and Logging Museum, at 766 S. First St. in Coos Bay.
The museum features the 104 steam locomotive and a refurbished caboose. It is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
