Henley won the final event to edge North Bend for the Class 4A-3A-2A-1A District 4 swimming title Saturday at Southern Oregon University.
Going into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, North Bend had 230 points, Cottage Grove 229 and Henley 228.
But Henley edged North Bend for first place with a time of 3 minutes, 50.06 seconds. North Bend was timed in 3:51.57.
The Bulldogs still qualified a healthy contingent of swimmers for this week’s state meet, which starts Friday at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham.
Rachel Heaney won both the 200 and 500 freestyle races — she was the top qualifier in the state in each event — for North Bend’s only two victories.
But Sarah Brown and Kelli Kronsberg also qualified in the 200 freestyle and Kronsberg, Amy Walker and Emily Hepworth all advanced in the 500 freestyle.
Brown finished second in the 100 butterfly to qualify, while Gwen Rogers advanced in the 100 freestyle.
North Bend’s team of Brown, Kronsberg, Rogers and Heaney also advanced in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
In the shorter relay, North Bend will be the second seed at state behind Henley, which set a new district meet record.
North Bend’s boys finished second behind Cottage Grove, but advanced several swimmers for state.
Matt Johnson broke the meet record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.07 and broke his own school record in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.06, though he finished second in the event to Cottage Grove standout David Elligott, the defending state champion.
Ephraim Morris won the 200 individual medley for the Bulldogs, while James Verger qualified for state by finishing second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 freestyle. Daniel Canaga qualified with his third-place finish in the 100 freestyle.
North Bend also won the 400 freestyle relay with a squad of Johnson, Verger, Morris and Canaga. The Bulldogs finished second, but advanced to state, in the 200 freestyle relay with the same group.
Cottage Grove had 289 points, while North Bend was second with 223.
“All the kids swam great,” said North Bend coach Chris Richmond. “Everybody swam best times.
“I hope we improve off that for the state meet.”
North Bend won the sportsmanship award for the second straight year.
Reedsport finished sixth, led by Alan Roy and Zack Fay, who were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.
Midwestern League
Marshfield’s boys finished third in the team race at the Midwestern League meet and advanced two individuals and two relays to state.
Garrett Swafford won the 200 individual medley for Marshfield’s only title. Kacy Neal qualified for state in the 500 freestyle, where he finished second, and also was second in the 200 freestyle.
Marshfield’s 200 medley relay team of Neal, Swafford, Zach Flathers and Coleman Metzler finished third, but advanced to state. The same group advanced in the 400 freestyle relay, where they finished second.
Among other Marshfield highlights, Flathers was fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 200 freestyle, Swafford finished third in the 100 breaststroke, Metzler was fifth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 freestyle, Justin Jones was seventh in the 100 freestyle, Kai Stufflebean was seventh in the individual medley, and Brealan Mosieur was sixth in the 500 freestyle.
North Eugene edged Thurston, 419 to 390, for the team title.
North Eugene also won the girls crown, with Marshfield fourth.
The Pirates didn’t qualify any swimmers for state, but had several strong efforts.
Kelsey Flathers was second in the individual medley and 100 backstroke, Jana Sadler finished second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 individual medley, Hannah Kamps was seventh in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 100 butterfly, Astrid Lewon was eighth in the 100 freestyle, Lisa Farr was sixth in the 500 freestyle and Ellen Fields was seventh, and Dana Weise was seventh in the 100 breaststroke. |
