Women's health fair focuses on caregiving
Monday, February 11, 2008 12:03 PM PST
Women of the South Coast are invited to the fifth-annual Women’s Health Day, hosted by Southern Coos Health District.
The day-long event will be held on Saturday at the Harbor Building in Old Town Bandon (formerly Harbor Hall), 325 Second St., S.E.
The theme is “Caring for Ourselves, Caring for Others” and speaks to the benefit of learning skills and accessing resources to help with caregiving and remembering to tend to ourselves as well, according to Southern Coos Hospital Community Health Education Coordinator Mary Kemp.
“It has become the Baby Boom generation’s latest life crisis — facing the dual pressures of raising their children and caring for their elders, often while also holding down a job away from home,” Kemp said.
The event will feature talks by Oregon Health & Science University and Oregon State University visiting faculty, as well as local health providers, with the goal of proving education, inspiration and resources.
Speakers will include Heather M. Young, a general nurse practitioner from OHSU, who will explore what caregiving means — the rewards and consequences and issues confronting women faced with the role of caregiving. Sharon Johnson, an Oregon State University associate professor and certified Powerful Tools of Caregiving trainer, will use interactive approaches to discuss self-care strategies and how to develop a self-care plan. Stephanie Polizzi, a registered dietitian and Oregon State University associate professor and extension agent has a background in nutrition, diabetes and weight management. Breakout sessions also will be provided by local providers Dr. Megan Holland and family nurse practitioner Anne Morgan.
The pre-registration fee of $5 includes lunch, door prizes and the opportunity to take part in an auction that includes handmade items, gift certificates and art from local individuals and businesses.
For information, those interested can call Kemp at 347-1601. Brochures are available at in the front lobby of Southern Coos Hospital, 900 11th St. S.E., Bandon. |
