Prep Recap for Feb. 9: Bandon, GB get big wins

The boys basketball teams from Bandon and Gold Beach positioned themselves in good shape in the race for the Sunset Conference tournament with home wins Friday.
Bandon beat Glide 57-39 and Gold Beach held off Coquille 54-49. That leaves those two teams tied for second at 6-5 with just Monday’s games remaining.
Glide and Myrtle Point are 5-6 and Coquille is 4-7.
Bandon and Gold Beach cannot be eliminated from contention Monday, when the Tigers visit Coquille and Gold Beach hosts Myrtle Point. If both win, they will meet in the first round of the league tournament Friday. If either lose, the could be in a playoff Tuesday for position in the tournament or for elimination.
Myrtle Point must win at Gold Beach or have Reedsport win at Glide to have a chance to move on. Coquille needs a win and a Glide loss.
Bandon had seven 3-pointers in its win over Glide Friday.
Connor Jackson had 15 points to lead the way.
Christian Clark and Elliot Standish scored 11 each for Glide.
Gold Beach held off a fourth-quarter charge by Coquille to win.
Logan Hockema led the Panthers with 15 points while teammate Mitch McDonald had 12 points. Mackenzie Burdett added 10 points.
Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross said the game was intense.
“Coquille played well,” Ross said. “They rebound well and make good, hard cuts to the basket.”
The high-scorers for Coquille were James Baldridge with 12 points and Brandon Sampson with 11 points.
Midwestern League
Pirates fall
Thurston topped visiting Marshfield 66-49 Friday.
The Pirates got off to a terrible start, being outscored 18-6 in the first quarter.
“We didn’t show up ready to play,” said Marshfield coach Doug Miles. “And if we don’t show up ready to play, we’re gonna get killed.”
Fresh from a back injury, Jesse McClintock led the Pirates with 11 points while Brogan Oswald added 10.
Far West League
Bruins still perfect
Brookings-Harbor beat South Umpqua 48-34 on Friday.
The Bruins played great defense, especially in the third quarter where they held the Lancers to a single point.
The top scorers for Brookings-Harbor were Chase Bansemer with 15 points and Fred Corpening with 10.
Leading South Umpqua were Jake Grady and Andrew Nale, who also had totals of 15 points and 10 points, respectively.
Sutherlin wins
Sutherlin beat host Douglas 58-47.
Caleb Trowbridge led Sutherlin with 22 points. Chris Mock and Dallas Reid each had 11 points for the Bulldogs. Jason Tingle led the Trojans with 19 points.
Skyline League
Pacific falls
Pacific missed a chance to move up in the league standings, falling 38-36 to visiting New Hope.
Pacific could face New Hope again in the first round league tournament next weekend, when the Pirates will need a win to reach the state playoffs.
New Hope outscored Pacific by six points in the third quarter.
“We went flat in the third,” said Pacific coach Wayne Everest.
Pacific managed to climb within two points in the closing minutes, but wasn’t able to tie the game.
Noah Cunningham had a game-high 13 points for the Warriors.
Leading the Pirates was Danny Keeler with 12 points.
UVC tops Powers
Umpqua Valley Christian held on to its first place position in the Skyline League standings by beating Powers 48-43 on Friday.
“UVC is the first place team,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb, “and we gave them everything they wanted.”
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sunset Conference
Panthers top Red Devils
Gold Beach tipped Coquille 38-32 to move into sole possession of second place.
Gold Beach coach Jim Hulslander said that both teams had a great defensive performance.
“It was a great defensive game for us, and Coquille fought hard,” he said.
Leading the Panthers was Katherine Zuber with 16 points, including two 3-pointers.
“Kathereine Zuber played outstanding on both sides, but the whole team really played good defense,” said Hulslander.
Emily Usselman led the Red Devils with 11 points.
Gold Beach faces league champion Myrtle Point at home in the regular-season finale on Monday, then will meet Coquille again in the opening round of the league tournament Friday.
Tigers top Wildcats
Becky Butler scored 25 points as Bandon beat visiting Glide 53-43 on Friday in their Sunset Conference game.
“Becky Butler had a great night,” said Bandon coach Ken Nice. “I’m proud of the way the team competed.”
Cassie Garrison led Glide with 14 points.
Skyline League
UVC edges Powers
Jorden Zerbach hit the game-winning shot in the final seconds as Umpqua Valley Christian squeaked by host 40-39 win over Powers.
The Cruisers rallied from an early eight-point deficit to take a 31-26 lead into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on.
“It was a good ball game,” said Powers coach Jody Cyr. “They just came out in the beginning and shot their hearts out.”
The loss could prove costly for Powers, which is tied with Elkton and Pacific for fourth place at 5-6 and needs to beat second-place Camas Valley today to be alive for the playoffs.
The top scorers for the game were Umpqua Valley Christian’s Sarah Harding and Powers’ Bilhe Marshall, with 12 points each. Nicole Bittner added 11 points for the Crusiers.
Pacific wins
Pacific topped New Hope 43-28 to keep its playoff hopes alive.
The Pirates pulled away from a 20-17 halftime lead for the victory.
“The girls really stepped up in the second half and played as a team and played their best defense all year,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag.
The Pirates host Elkton today in a loser-out game.
Natalie Manning had 13 points and Ashley Curry 12 for Pacific in the win. Amber Willingham scored 11 for New Hope.
Far West League
Lancers win
South Umpqua topped host Brookings-Harbor 50-32
Tessa Falk had 17 points and Triana Crane 11 for the Lancers. Jessie Goergen and Kara Miller had nine each for the Bruins.
Bulldogs edge Trojans
League-leading Sutherlin topped host Douglas 47-44 to stay perfect in league play.
Tess Bennett had 15 points and Heather Weber 10 for the Bulldogs, who travel to second-place North Bend on Tuesday. Katy King had a game-high 23 points for Douglas.
