The following are events, meetings and activities planned on the South Coast this weekend and in coming weeks.

Amvets to plan for Memorial Day parade

Amvets Post 10 will hold a regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Eagles Lodge, 568 South Second St., in Coos Bay.

All members can bring a new member with them. Planning is under way and volunteers are needed to make the parade bigger and better, a press release said.

Computer class helps beginning users

A free, basic computer workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Coos Bay Library’s Cedar Room. This workshop is being made available by the Bay Area Seniors’ Computer Club. This event is open to all.

The club will provide laptops and members will be available to assist anyone with questions. This is a walk-in, first come, first-serve event. The nonprofit computer club is for seniors, and the goal is to keep their members knowledgeable about computers and offer help as needed. Those who plan to attend the workshop should bring questions and even a laptop if possible to help get advice, personalized instruction or trouble shooting.

The club meets on the first and third Fridays of the month at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, in Coos Bay. Coffee hour is at 9:30 a.m., with the meeting from 10 to 11 a.m.

Lighthouse School fundraiser is Feb. 23

Adults are invited to dance the night away at the fourth-annual Lighthouse School Fundraiser “Disco Inferno — Burn, Baby, Burn” on Saturday, Feb. 23, in North Bend.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Sawmill convention center, next to the Autumn House restaurant, 3491 Broadway St. There will be dinner and then dancing to the tunes by DJ Troy Woody. Silent and live auctions.

Funkadelic disco attire is encouraged. Tickets can be purchased for $45 each via the Lighthouse School, 93670 Viking Lane; or Books By The Bay, 1875 Sherman Ave.

PTSD topic for lecture later this month

Dr. Richard Staggenborg of the Bandon VA Clinic will talk about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, in Eden Hall, room 1, on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus in Coos Bay.

The discussion, “PTSD: Identifying Signs and Talking to the Returning Service Member,” is geared toward family members, friends and professionals who interact with individuals returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, a press release said. All veterans and family members of veterans from other conflicts also can benefit from the talk, which is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the problems faced by all veterans with PTSD. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Church to host movie night, discussion

“Evan Almighty” will be the featured movie at a free movie afternoon at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 2289 Meade St., North Bend.

The movie is a comedy about what happens when God asks Evan to build an ark. There will be popcorn and drinks. A discussion will follow the movie. For more information, those interested can call Vicki Morgan at 267-3969 or e-mail jovic@charter.net.

‘Women’s voices’ topic for church event

Coos Bay Presbyterian Women are inviting the community to their annual tea at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at the First Presbyterian Church of Coos Bay, 438 Elrod Ave.

The program’s theme is Women’s Voices, celebrating the voices of women in our community, a press release said. Those voices will include: Rev. Sandra Collins, pastor of Myrtle Point Presbyterian Church, with vocal selections; Margaret Jones, coordinator at Camp Myrtlewood and peace activist; Clair Mohr with violin selections; Mary Scheirman reading her poetry selections; and Kathy Erickson, managing editor of The World newspaper.
