Coquille resident Carl Foster, the man injured following an arrest attempt by Coquille police officers Jan. 12, is now listed in fair condition at a Eugene hospital.

The 57-year-old man’s condition was upgraded Thursday afternoon at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. He was no longer listed as being in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Foster had been in serious and critical condition in the intensive care unit for more than two weeks at the hospital following surgery to a fractured vertebra on Jan. 14.

He was injured during an arrest by Coquille Police Officers James Bryant and Chris Webley after they went to a home on North Dean Street to question Foster. Foster was wanted in connection with a criminal mischief complaint the previous day. A press release from the Coos County District Attorney’s Office on Jan. 16 indicated Foster resisted arrest and was pulled to the ground by the officer. Once he was on the ground, the officers noticed Foster had stopped breathing and was limp.

Foster was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital and then life-flighted to Sacred Heart.

An investigation into the incident is continuing. Last week, Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier announced the case would be presented to a grand jury.

Since this happened, I wonder what if any has the Police Dept did to make changes in how to handle situations such as this. Police officers are constantly training, or at least they should be. That job is a constant training program because of the nature of it and the new situations that occur I hope that the officers, and city officials can learn from this issue.

What is with all the poor Mr. Foster comments? How come no one has asked his victims how they feel about what he did to them? Why is he more important than them?

CARNAC...You are correct they are not obligated to print the press release but if they choose to they cannot change what it says. They can't say the "alleged press release", "indicated" doesn't quite equate to fact or certainty either.

re READ, READ, READ ...+COMPREHEND:

"Indicated" implies a certainty which does not exist here, and The World is not obligated to print a press release as if it were fact. Their reportage should say "alleged" regardless of what they cite as a source.

CARNAC AND AGHAST!....Read it again and you will see that the paper reported that... "A press release from the Coos County District Attorney’s Office on Jan. 16 indicated Foster resisted arrest and was pulled to the ground by the officer."
They cannot change what the press release said and they aren't the ones saying he resisted arrest so they have no reason to add "alleged".

aghast! wrote on Feb 8, 2008 1:24 PM:

CARNAC is right - Foster is alleged to have resisted. The paper should make that clear. Further "resistance" is subjective, perhaps resistance was nothing more than nursing four broken ribs and getting on the ground too slowly for those busy, busy officers.

I wouldn't think a person's medical status, regardless of whether it involves police, etc., should be available online but goodness, here it is!

"In accordance with the Code of Cooperation between hospitals and the news media, PeaceHealth provides limited information on patients who have been in an accident, have been in a situation involving the police, or are otherwise of public interest."

If people did not fight with police, there would not be this issue. People have to take responsibility for there actions. Even if they get hurt, when police say stop you don't fight them. Aleast that was what I was tought growing up.

carnac wrote on Feb 8, 2008 12:16 PM:

You really should phrase the indicated resistance to arrest as what it is: ALLEGED. Maybe Foster did, maybe he didn't, but so far we only have what the police claim happened to go on.

Mr. Foster's condition is available to those interested from hospital spokesmen or online at the hospital's Web site.

dave wrote on Feb 8, 2008 11:47 AM:

So, now the poor man is in "fair condition" instead of critical. Where do you get your information? Not Sacred Heart Medical Center. Due to the Hippa laws, the hospital would not be able to answer any question that was asked by you. Mr. Foster would be able to file suit due to this law, so I would be careful in what I write.
