Coquille resident Carl Foster, the man injured following an arrest by Coquille police officers Jan. 12, is now in fair condition at a Eugene hospital.

Foster, 57, was upgraded to fair condition Thursday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. He has been moved into the hospital’s intensive care step-down unit, his daughter Kayce Faught said.

Foster had been in serious condition in the intensive care unit for more than two weeks at the hospital following surgery to a fractured vertebra on Jan. 14.

He was injured during an arrest by Coquille Police Officers James Bryant and Chris Webley after they went to a home on North Dean Street to question Foster. Foster was wanted in connection with a criminal mischief complaint the previous day. A press release from the Coos County District Attorney’s Office on Jan. 16 indicated Foster resisted arrest and was pulled to the ground by the officer. Once he was on the ground, the officers noticed Foster had stopped breathing and was limp.

Foster was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital and then life-flighted to Sacred Heart.
