Turn off the TV and grab family or a friend. There’s plenty to do on the South Coast on Saturday. Here are the scheduled events.
8 a.m. Pancake breakfastThe Bandon Lions Club is sponsoring its annual Sweethearts’ Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Bandon School District cafeteria on Ninth Street Southwest.
The breakfast will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, ham, juice, coffee or tea. Cost for the breakfast will be $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 3 to 11. The price includes access to the silent auction.
9 a.m. Pony Creek cleanupThe Cape Arago Audubon Society will hold a community volunteer workday. The group will gather at the school district’s property along lower Pony Creek in North Bend. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the North Bend High School tennis courts and baseball fields.
Textile Arts GuildThe Heritage Textile Arts Guild will meet at 9 a.m. at its studio at space 157a, in the Pony Village Mall in North Bend.
The program will feature textile artists Corrienne Geddes and Jean Porter from Roseburg. Geddes will talk about vests made from handwoven fabric. Porter will demonstrate vest making from knitted felted fabric and from quilted fabric.
10 a.m. Florence book saleMembers of Friends of the Siuslaw Public Library will open the doors for the annual Winter Book Sale, featuring thousands of books in more than 30 categories, and CDs and DVDs.
Doors will open at 10 a.m. The library is located at 1460 Maple St. in Florence.
10:30 a.m. Bandon library book saleThe Bandon Library Friends and Foundation will hold its annual Sweetheart Book Sale in the Sprague Community Room at the library, 1204 11th St. S.W. in City Park.
The sale will be from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers can fill a grocery bag with most books for $2. (The book sale started today from 1 to 5 p.m. and will be on Friday, too, from 10:30 to 5 p.m.)
11 a.m. Artists associationThe Bay Area Artists Association will meet at 11 a.m. at Eden Hall at Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.
Susan Lehman will present an overview of the history of collage and explore some of the varied approaches. Pat Snyder will lead a group demonstration of layering techniques, and Lehman will show how to transfer images for artistic use. Work of regional collage artists will be exhibited.
Charleston Crab FeedThe Charleston Merchant’s Annual Crab Feed will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the old Charleston school, on Seven Devils Road.
Dinners will include salad, bread, baked beans and a beverage. Plastic bibs will be provided, courtesy of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission. Price for the meal will depend on the crab catch.
Hostesses will include the Wild Women of Charleston. Participants should bring crab-cracking tools, although some will be provided.
Children’s storytellerMusician and storyteller Ann-Louise Sterry will be the featured entertainer at 11 a.m. at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 W. Anderson Ave. Sterry will present a program combining children’s music, song and storytelling with audience involvement and participation.
Sex abuse prevention informational eventAn event on preventing sexual abuse will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pony Village Mall, on Virginia Avenue in North Bend.
The event has been organized by local Girl Scouts.
Visitors can learn what resources are available to victims and their families, learn what the risk factors are for sexual assault and abuse, and learn how the community can prevent it from occurring. There will be speakers, self-defense demonstrations and informational booths.

11:30 a.m. DAR luncheonThe Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11:30 a.m. at Fishermans Grotto Restaurant, 91149 Cape Arago Highway in Charleston. The guest speaker will be Judy Wheeler, speaking about Valentine’s Day.
Girl’s Night OutA Girl’s Night Out “Health and Beauty Fair” will be offered from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Olsen-Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point. The food will be chicken Caesar salad. The event will cost $10.
The special feature will be health and beauty care vendors. The guest speaker will be Gail Turner Bauer, the first woman to build and fly an experimental airplane across the United States.

12:15 p.m. Canine Good CitizenThe Furry Friends Therapy Dogs group will offer the “Canine Good Citizen” test from 12:15 to 2 p.m. at the Coos Bay City Hall, 500 Central Ave.
The test is open to purebred as well as mixed-breed dogs. Participants can drop in.
An entry fee of $10 is required. Participants should bring a leash and a buckle or slip collar, and a positive attitude with lots of praise for the canine companion, a press release said. No prong collars, head halters or harnesses will be allowed during the test.
1 p.m. Buddhist healingCoos Bay resident Larry Haun will offer a session of Buddhist healing practices from 1 to 4 p.m. at Unity by the Bay, 2100 Union Ave., North Bend.
Instruction will be given in meditation; breathing practice; Tonglen, a meditation practice based on compassion; and Tsalung movement.
South Coast SinglesThe South Coast Singles will meet at the Lucky Star Restaurant, at U.S. Highway 101 and Newmark Ave. Lunch will begin at noon, followed by a meeting at 1 p.m. For more information, those interested can call 267-3443, 267-4148 or 888-2682.
6 p.m. Presidential rallyA support rally for presidential candidate Ron Paul will be held at 6 p.m. at Sobers, 181 Anderson Ave., downtown Coos Bay.
The night will include rallies and cheering sessions for the candidate.
Zonta fundraiser dinnerZonta Club of the Coos Bay Area presents its 10th-annual Celebrity Dinner Dance and auction at the North Bend Community Center.
Dinner will be served by 36 volunteer celebrity servers. The social hour starts at 6 p.m., with dinner, catered by The Coach House at 7. After dinner, The Flashbacks will perform live. Also, a silent auction will be held throughout the evening.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person and can be purchased by calling Judy McMakin at 347-9194.
7:30 p.m. Artists associationA Valentine’s dance will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Farwest Hall, on state Highway 42 S, Bandon.
The dance is free. No alcohol or smoking is allowed. Donations to the Bandon Odd-fellows/Grange sponsors are welcome. The evening will begin with a half-hour dance class.
