The following are community events scheduled in the coming weeks.

NB event focuses on combatting sex abuse

An informational event on preventing sexual abuse will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Pony Village Mall, on Virginia Avenue in North Bend. 

The event has been organized by local Girl Scouts.

Visitors can learn about resources for victims and their families, learn what the risk factors are for sexual assault and abuse, and learn how the community can prevent it from occurring. There will be speakers, self-defense demonstrations and informational booths.

From 1995 to 2005, an average of 146 cases of sexual assault or abuse have been reported in Coos County each year. Statistically, only 40 percent of these incidences are reported — making the real number closer to 365 cases per year, according to a press release.

Singles club to share lunch on Saturday

The South Coast Singles will meet on Saturday at the Lucky Star Restaurant, at U.S. Highway 101 and Newmark Ave., in North Bend.

SOLV community training next week

Two SOLV training opportunities will be offered on Friday, Feb. 15, in Coos Bay. They will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts, at Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

Designed for school-based educators, the Service-Learning Workshop will teach about successful teaching and learning strategy; help students identify and adopt a community priority; meet school-based academic and curricular goals; and build community partnerships for civic engagement.

The volunteer action training will teach participants how to envision, organize and implement successful community projects. The workshop is free to participants who agree to coordinate a SOLV project in the community within one year.
