Oregon high court promises quick ruling on challenge to session

SALEM (AP) — The Oregon Supreme Court says it will rule quickly on a challenge to next week’s special legislative session.
The court heard arguments Friday on a challenge to the validity of the session but issued no immediate ruling.
Chief Justice Paul De Muniz said that with the session set to begin Monday, the court would issue a ruling as soon as possible.
Republican Sen. Larry George of Sherwood sued to stop the session, saying there’s no emergency to justify having lawmakers meet this year.
Earlier this week, a circuit judge found that the Legislature has broad authority to call itself into session, and a January letter from legislative leaders was sufficient.
