Community Sports, Fast Breaks for Feb. 2: Softball clinic scheduled for Feb. 9

All girls in third-grade and above and their coaches are eligible for a free training clinic next weekend.

Mike Wells, ASA State Softball Commissioner from Portland, will be in town Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday Feb. 10, to work with coaches and players on their softball skills. Wells will be assisted by Southwestern Oregon’s head softball coach Megan Corries and the Southwestern players, as well as Jeri Young — Southwestern’s pitching coach and local ASA Commisioner.

The coaches training will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the players session (coaches also are welcome) will be held at the same time on Sunday. Both trainings will be at the Southwestern Oregon Community College Recreation Center gymnasium and cover sliding, base running, throwing, infield/outfield drills, hitting and pitching/catching.

Registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Coaches and players should wear gym shoes and each have their own glove. For more information, those interested can call Jeri Young at 269-0402, Karen Bauder at 267-3635 or Megan Corriea at 888-2525.    

Hoops skills challenge

The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon will be hosting a local Jr. NBA/WNBA Skills Challenge sponsored by Singular on Sunday at 1 p.m.

All boys and girls ages 7-14 as of May 16 are eligible to participate. Proof of age should be provided at registration.

Club membership is not required.

The competition is free and features a course that includes dribbling, layups, free throws and passing. It is  a timed event with a penalty if a violation occurs.

Registration will begin at noon Sunday at the Boys & Girls Club’s Peirce Courts.

Millicoma team wins title

The Millicoma Intermediate Shool sixth-grade girls basketball team won the Newport Storm Basketball Tournament on Jan. 26-27.

The girls took home the first place trophy after completing the weekend with a 4-0 record. The Mustangs beat the Corvallis Future Spartans 49-12, Newport 45-15 and Lebanon 29-11, and then defeated Lebanon again in the championship game 29-21.

The team includes: Kirsten Woolsey, Alyssa Stevens, Abby Thrall, Baily Garrett, Sam Ring, Natalie Hill, Stacie Gayewski, Tracee Scott, Elyse Trendell and Shalah Collicott.

The victorious weekend marked the first of several tournaments the girls plan on attending this year.  

North Bend Independent baseball meeting

The North Bend Independent Baseball program has scheduled a Feb. 13 board meeting to elect its 2008 officers.

The meeting will be held at the North Bend Public Library at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in the program may attend this meeting and run for office.

Oregon Select Baseball tryouts scheduled

Oregon Select Baseball, Oregon’s highly competitive statewide youth baseball program, will be holding its annual tryouts for its western and nationally competitive baseball teams on the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis.

The tryouts will be held at the McAlexander Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 9, from noon to 4 p.m.

Oregon Select Baseball is looking for Oregon’s top baseball players who are between the ages of 9 and 14 on or before April 30, to represent the state of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Selected players will attend numerous top-level tournaments throughout the Northwest and California while having the opportunity to experience several national youth baseball World Series events. Past teams have attended and had success at major events in Southern California, Arizona and Colorado.

To attend this tryout or to schedule a future tryout, prospective players must call (541) 788-8520 or visit http://www.leaguelineup.com/oregon2005 to complete the tryout form. Players will be required to pay a tryout fee of $10 at check-in to cover insurance and facility cost.

Spring soccer and track registrations

All boys and girls interested in playing soccer or participating on a track and field team should register now at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon. The first games for spring soccer, for first- through sixth-graders will be held at the end of March.

Anyone  wanting to play should register now to be placed on a team. Practices may begin toward the end of February. The fee is $40 with a current club membership.

Track and field is for boys and girls in fourth- through sixth-grades. Teams will be formed in Coos Bay, North Bend, Bandon and Reedsport. Individuals in other areas are welcome to participate.
