Myrtle Point stayed perfect in the Sunset Conference, setting up a showdown with second-place Coquille on Tuesday, by beating host Reedsport 55-32 on Friday.

The Bobcats host the Red Devils with a chance to clinch a tie for the title.

Reedsport opened up strong, ending the first quarter in front 14-10. Shortly thereafter, the Bobcats took the lead in convincing fashion, using their awesome defense to hold Reedsport to a single point in the fourth quarter.

“Myrtle Point did a nice job,” said Reedsport coach Lynn Fulps, “they are definitely getting better as they get to the end of the season.”

Katie Johnston and Megan Ross led the Bobcats with 16 points each. Sam Sanders added 10 points.

Reedsport’s Hannah Smith had 14 points.

Red Devils win

Coquille kept pace with the Bobcats by beating visiting Glide 52-39, though the Red Devils weren’t thrilled with their performance.

“We’re going to have to play better Tuesday,” Coquille coach Jennifer Sproul said.

The Red Devils jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter and led by 18 through three quarters, but never put Glide away, letting the Wildcats pull within 10 points briefly in the final quarter.

Katy Pflaum had 13 points and Mary Jo Pflaum added 10 for the Red Devils.

Kristin Nelson had nine points for the Wildcats.

Coquille finally secured the win by playing keep-away with the ball and making free throws in the final minutes — they were 22-for-30 for the game from the line.

“I was pleased with the way we took care of the ball in the last two minutes,” Sproul said.

Challengers top Tigers

Cascade Christian beat Bandon 58-42 Friday, to move into a tie for fourth with Reedsport.

The Challengers came out strong, holding Bandon to 12 points in the first half.

After Bandon cut the deficit to 45-35, Cascade Christian’s Chelsea Cason nailed three 3-point shots, keeping the Tigers at bay. Cason had two other treys, and scored 28 points in the game.

Bandon’s Briana Valentine put up 15 points and Becky Butler added 13 points.

“We fell behind in the first half but adjusted to it in the second,” said Bandon coach Ken Nice.

North Bend wins

North Bend overcame a strong effort from host Brookings-Harbor to beat the Bruins 34-28 Friday.

The Bulldogs trailed 12-9 at halftime and led just 18-16 entering the final quarter.

North Bend coach Mike Forrester said the Bulldogs were stymied by various defenses used by the Bruins.

“They did a great job,” he said. “They were really well-coached.

North Bend finally got some breathing room by making free throws after missing their first 10 and with the help of a big 3-pointer by Brooke Davison.

Blair Davis and Megan Meador led North Bend with eight points each. Davis had all her points after halftime and Meador scored six in the fourth quarter.

“The kids stuck it out and held their composure,” Forrester said.

North Bend did lose Davison to a sprained ankle.

Kara Miller led the Bruins with a game-high 17 points.

Camas Valley squeaked by Pacific 33-32 on Friday night.

The game went back and forth several times in the dwindling minutes. A Pacific player attempted a last-second shot that swooped in and back out of the basket.

“It was a very aggressive game with good defense on both sides,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag.

The Pirates were playing in the absence of key player Jesse Culley.
