A rally is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, on the front steps of the Capitol Building in Salem, for people who want to demonstrate their opposition to planned liquefied natural gas projects in the state.

The state of Oregon is considering proposals for three terminals and four related pipelines to import LNG into the state.

The purpose of the rally, organizers said, is to provide a venue for residents to demand that Gov. Ted Kulongoski use the full power of state law to stop proposed LNG terminals planned for Coos Bay and on the Columbia River.

The rally will feature speakers, musicians, signs and farm equipment.

Rally organizers and other LNG opponents argue:

* the LNG projects threaten to increase Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions by millions of tons per year;

* billions spent on LNG infrastructure should instead be spent on clean energy solutions, including efficiency and renewables;

* such infrastructure would threaten commercial and tourist economy on Coos Bay and on the Columbia River due to the high security standards required for these dangerous facilities; and

* pipelines planned to link the terminals to California will cross over 600 miles, resulting in condemnation of private property, misusing public lands and destroying forest and river habitat.
