Powers recall effort begins again

Another effort is under way to recall the mayor and three city councilors of Powers.
Powers resident Marjorie Kalb filed recall applications at City Hall on Jan. 22, targeting Mayor Barbara Cottom; and councilors Pete Cunningham, Bob Leckband and Larry Northup.
The same four elected officials were the target of a recall campaign in 2007, following a pair of contested personnel decisions. Kalb and fellow Powers resident Beverly Elliott turned in completed petitions in November. They were disqualified, however, because the petition sheets were not properly numbered and the chief petitioner, Elliott, did not turn them in. Kalb did.
Kalb now has until April 7 to collect at least 53 signatures for each petition in order to set up a recall election.
Cottom and Leckband are currently up for re-election this fall, while Cunningham’s and Northup’s terms run through 2010.
