The following are events scheduled in South Coast communities in the following weeks.

NBHS play ‘Mousetrap’ opens on stage Friday

North Bend High School’s Hesperian Players will present Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap” starting this weekend.

The play will open at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, in the multipurpose room. It will run two weekends, Feb. 1-3; and 8-9, with Friday showings at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Rocky Mountain Elk group hosts fundraiser

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Curry Coastal Chapter, will hold its fourth-annual banquet and auction on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Event Center on the Beach, 29392 Ellensburg in Gold Beach.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. for a social hour, which will include drawings, raffles, games, drinks and a silent auction. Dinner and the live auction will follow.

Garden Club features container gardening

Members and guests will learn all about container gardening at the February meeting of the Coos Bay Garden Club.

Master Gardener Jo An Conway will be demonstrating how and what to plant in containers.  There will be plenty of ideas for creative displays of container plants, illustrated with pictures, books and slides. Anyone with just a few square feet of outdoor space can enjoy gardening when using containers. 

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1290 Thompson Road, Coos Bay.

Comedian to portray Groucho Marx

Award-winning actor/director/playwright Frank Ferrante will recreate his PBS, New York and London acclaimed portrayal of legendary comedian Groucho Marx  at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at Sprague Community Theater, in Bandon City Park on 11th Street.

The two-act comedy consists of the best Groucho one-liners, anecdotes and songs. The event is suitable for all ages.

Reserved tickets cost $20 and are available by e-mailing tickets@bandonshowcase.org, calling the theater at 347-7426 or at Bandon Mercantile, Devon’s Boutique or at the door.

Orchestra tickets to go on sale Friday

The Oregon Coast Chamber Orchestra will perform its Winter 2008 concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, at the Pacific Auditorium at Reedsport High School.

Half-price tickets ($5) will go on sale Friday at the Reedsport branch of Umpqua Bank and at the Reedsport-Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce.

The concert will feature works by well-known composers including Beethoven, Debussy, Granados, Grieg, Holst and Johann Strauss Jr. Featured soloists include French hornists Wilke Renwick and John Dodge, as well as tubist Dan McGraw.
