Diversity in education focus of guest lectureSouthwestern Oregon Community College is hosting a free special lecture for students and community members in coordination with Martin Luther King Day.
The talk is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern campus in Coos Bay.
In his talk “My Life as a Crow” guest speaker Bruce Thomas discusses the challenges and realities facing students of color entering higher education, a press release said. Thomas, a professor of counseling and comparative literature at Glendale Community College in Arizona, is a two-time Fulbright recipient who has taught as an exchange instructor in Germany and China. He has been listed among the Who’s Who among American College Teachers for the last three years.
Reedsport invites kids to library story timeA Preschool Story Time is held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, at the Reedsport Branch Library, 395 Winchester Ave.
There will be stories and crafts. No sign up is required, however children must be supervised. Kindergarten and homeschooled children also are welcome.
Still time to submit recipés for cookbook The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon is looking for recipes to include in a new Community Cookbook. The cookbook will include recipes provided by club board members, staff, youth, parents and other community members. The books will cost $10 each, and proceeds will go to club programs.
Anyone interested in providing a recipe can pick up a form at the club office, 3333 Walnut Ave., Coos Bay; or download it at

To pre-order a cookbook, those interested can call the Boys & Girls Club at 267-3635.
The Youth Center is open weekdays from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Any youth in grades one to 12 can come check out the daily activities.
Chocolatiers heading to Brookings festivalThe Third-annual Winter Art & Chocolate Festival will be held Feb. 9-10 in Brookings.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the cafeteria building, 629 Easy St. The festival brings together a select group of artists, craftsmen and chocolate makers the weekend before Valentine’s Day. This year there will be many new things to see, hear, taste and do, a press release said.
New this year is a contest called “My Favorite Chocolate Recipe.” Contestants will compete for cash and prizes to be awarded during the festival and a chance to be included in the first edition of “My Favorite Chocolate Recipes Cookbook.” Entries should be cooked or baked fresh for the contest, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Feb. 9. Judges will pick a grand prize winner, as well as second- and third-place winners.

Movie showing raises funds for health clinicFiddlesticks Gifts staff is sponsoring a Valentine’s Day Great Movie Giveaway benefit for the Waterfall Community Health Center on Feb. 14 at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay.
The featured movie will be “Ghost,” starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze and showing at 8 p.m. Tickets will cost $5 and the proceeds will go to the nonprofit health clinic based in North Bend.
Those who attend will be eligible to win prizes of jewelry, perfume, pop star pictures, earrings, watches, sunglasses and more. Prize drawings begin at 7:30 p.m.
Shama House seeking bicycle donationsThe Self Help and Mutual Aid House coordinators are seeking bikes for a new program under development.
Members are developing a “Bike Borrow” system to enable members to get mobile and involved in the community. Used bikes, in good condition, are welcome. Donations are tax deductible.

The SHAMA House provides a place for adults living with mental illness to gather for socialization and skill building. SHAMA House is a program of the Mental Health Association for Southwestern Oregon that serves around 70 individuals per month and most of the members do not drive.
