Talk to be on diversity in education
Southwestern Oregon Community College is hosting a free special lecture for students and community members in coordination with Martin Luther King Day earlier this month.
The talk is scheduled at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern campus in Coos Bay.
In his talk “My Life as a Crow” guest speaker Bruce Thomas discusses the challenges and realities facing students of color entering higher education.
Thomas, a professor of counseling and comparative literature at Glendale Community College in Arizona, is a two-time Fulbright recipient who has taught as an exchange instructor in Germany and China.
LNG opponents plan bus trek to protest
Citizens from around the state will attend a rally from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the front steps of the Capitol Building in Salem.
They plan to demonstrate their opposition to planned liquefied natural gas projects in the state. The demonstration will feature speakers and musicians.

Storyteller feature of library program
Musician and storyteller Ann-Louise Sterry is the featured entertainer at the Valentine’s Day program at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Coos Bay Public Library, 525 W. Anderson Ave.
Sterry will present a program, which will combine children’s music, song, and storytelling with lots of audience involvement and participation.
Her performance will be followed by a Valentine craft and treats. This free, 45-minute program promises is open to the whole family. For more information, those interested can visit the library or call 269-1101.
Hospice to honor volunteers Feb. 15
South Coast Hospice and Palliative Care Services will be holding its 22nd-Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, Feb. 15, in Coos Bay.
The event will be held at the Community Bereavement and Education Center on the South Coast Hospice campus, 1620 Thompson Road. There will be entertainment and speakers.
Volunteers work with patients, in the hospice thrift store and in the administration buildings. They also help patients with their gardening, running errands, building ramps and providing emotional support to patients and their families alike.
Hospice is inviting businesses to participate in the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon by providing South Coast Hospice with gift certificates and prizes to give away at the event.
