A Coos Bay woman was the latest victim in a job advertisement scam aimed at readers of The World.

According to a Coos Bay Police Department press release, at about 9 a.m., Thursday the woman called police to report that she’d been the victim of a money order scam.

The woman said she called a Canadian phone number listed in a print ad in The World. A woman answered, refusing to answer her questions about a job listing. Instead, the woman told her she’d send her a packet with more information, the release said.

In a few weeks, the woman received a packet containing a money order for several hundred dollars and instructions on how to cash it. Later, she received another letter identical to the first containing a check for more than $2,000.

Sensing a scam, the woman alerted police and The World.

The World’s Senior Web Developer Steve McDaniel said it’s much less likely that readers on the company’s Web site will be exposed to an online scam. The newspaper switched to the Yahoo! classified database in November. He also advises readers to be wary of print ads promising money for essentially doing nothing.

Police advise residents to have their banks wait on money orders and alert police if they turn out to be a fake.

I agree with the concerned citizen on their thoughts. The paper needs to check out all items that come into their office and make sure that it is ligitimate because they can be held responsible for scams just as much as the artist who created the scam. Where is the Government on this? Why arn't they taking more action as well. Accountability. That is what it's all about

I was the the so called "victim " and I am very dispappointed that the World Newspaper mixed up the facts and used the warning as an opportuntiy to promote their new website. I was not a victim as I did not cash those checks. I was reporting a fraud and had evedence to prove it. As a concerned citizen I wanted to let the community know this was happening in our area and what to look for. The only way this can be stopped is for the commuity to know what is going on. I was open to granting an interview and showing them the evedence. I spent most of the day contacting the media and all those who were beigh fradulantly used such as the Wal-mart Money Gram business and two federal credit unions that were on the fradulant money orders. If the World Newspaper is really interested in a full on report they can contact me. The Classified ad manager has my phone number. I wrote out a complete description of what happend and included the evedence with my name removed fromn the documents and I am circulating this to all my friends. I commend the police depaprtment as they sent an officer out right away.
If you want to know more info about this scam type Pioneer Federal Credit Union into the search engine. On their website is a warning about the scam. Click on that and you will have a clear picture of what happened and is happening now.

When is The World going to take some responsibility for these scams. You would think that with an entire online and classified staff that they would have someone checking the ads that are posted on their site. Someone should hold them accountable for having scams on their site.

Hope the Coos Bay police are on their toes. I live in Vancouver, WA and the police were very nonchalant when I turned over evidence that I collected when I was the target of a scam. I got a response from an ad on Craigslist. They gave me the line that the money order being sent was cut from this guys travel expense fund and accidentally included his airfare and incidental money. Wanted me to cash it, keep $1000 for downpayment on my mobile home and send him the rest via Western Union. Yeah, RIGHT! I turned over copies of all email communication, along with IP addresses, and the UNOPENED fed ex envelope and the police officer told me they get hundreds of those every day. Said he'd turn it all over to the Justice Department. So, this is not a priority.
