The following are announcements for group meeting and activites on the South Coast this weekend.
SaturdayThe Lakeside Lions are sponsoring a free clothes giveaway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lakeside Lions Hall, 890 Bowron Road.
The South Coast Striders are hosting two hikes out of Sunset Bay State Park, starting at 10 a.m. Participants can return to Sunset Bay at this point for a four-mile round trip. Others will continue out to Arago Point and back at a brisker pace for a total distance of nine miles. U.S. Bureau of Land Management geologist Tim Barnes will share the basics of Oregon coast geology along the hike to Simpson Beach.
The Constitution Party of Coos County will meet at 11 a.m. at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave. For more information, those interested can call Steve Noorlander, chairman, at 267-7755.
A class on body awareness will be offered from 11 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 438 Elrod Ave., in Coos Bay. Easy stretching, yoga postures, qi gung and tai chi will be incorporated into a smooth, gentle program focusing on balance, breathing and posture. The South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve near Charleston invites the community to “Cultural Connections” program. From 9 a.m. to noon participants will spend the morning in the field discovering culturally significant areas of South Slough. Those who plan to attend should dress for the weather. The Military Officers of America Association meets at noon on the fourth Saturday of each month, at a different restaurant each time. Officers and former officers from any branch of the military are welcome to attend. “Great Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest: New Views of Monitoring and the Episodic Tremor and Slip Story” will be the topic of a free talk by scientist Dr. Kelin Wang at 7 p.m. in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern Coos Bay campus, 1988 Newmark Ave. The lecture marks the 308th anniversary of the last great Cascadia subduction zone earthquake. Wang plans to discuss some of the cutting edge science associated with the study of Cascadia megathrust earthquakes.
Dance lessons will be offered from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bandon Grange Farwest Hall on state Highway 42 South, just east of U.S. Highway 101. A dance follows the lessons from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Those attending can wear casual clothing, and singles and couples are welcome. No smoking or alcohol is allowed. SundayFree movie night starts at 6:30 p.m. at the North Bend United Methodist Church, 2289 Meade St. The movie will be “Amazing Grace” (2007), about William Wilberforce and his fight to end the British slave trade in the 19th century.
