Coquille resident Carl Foster, the man who was injured Jan. 12 by Coquille Police Officers during an arrest attempt, is now in critical condition in a Eugene hospital.

Foster, 57, was downgraded from serious to critical condition early this morning at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, according to a spokeswoman.

Foster had been listed in serious condition following surgery to a fractured vertebra on Jan. 14.

He was injured during an arrest by officers from the Coquille Police Department on Jan. 12. It was around 9 a.m. that officers James Bryant and Chris Webley went to a home on North Dean Street to locate Foster. Foster was wanted in connection with a criminal mischief complaint the previous day. A press release from the Coos County District Attorney’s Office following the incident indicated Foster resisted arrest and was pulled to the ground by the officers. Officers then noticed the man had stopped breathing and was limp.

Foster was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital and then life-flighted to Sacred Heart.

This afternoon, District Attorney R. Paul Frasier said the investigation by members of the Coos County Major Crime Team is continuing.

Jodi, it may help you to understand the attitude of some posters who show no sign of empathy for Mr. Foster and his family if you google: sociopathic behavior. I agree with Aghast!, save forgiveness for the divine, whatever you perceive that to be, and let's concentrate on how we might, as a community, help the Foster family.

It seems to be a Coquillian habit, bashing those with different points of view and always by anonymous ad hominem attacks. Mr Foster was just a struggling working stiff like everyone else in Coquille.

Attacking him is meant to detract from the seriousness of the event and the danger the general public is in with these officers still on duty. Defend the police department but save blind faith for the divine and leave Mr Foster alone, he has suffered enough.

to think about it, i am not judging any body only God does that. All I am saying is that these men need to pray for forgiveness for their actions and the outcome of what has happened to this man. I pray for forgiveness everyday for what I may have done in my life that may have hurt someone along the way. When you hurt someone to this extent I personally, don't consider it to be honorable. You have a right to the way you believe as I have the right to mine, therefore don't judge me.

His condition is worse now and you people are still bashing him, God for bid if this was your relative. You should be ashamed of your selfs.

Jodi wrote on Jan 25, 2008 11:54 AM:

For his condition to be going down hill,it's pretty bad still all the negativity about Mr. Foster and thats all you people can talk about.

To Hippie Hater:

Were the same parents that taught you to be responsible for yer actions, the same ones that taught you to "HATE" Hippies?

What part of child rearing books were THEY reading, as yer only 22 years old, you might ask them.

so young...and already a hater!

I can not believe the liberal garbage being spewed in these comments. The man RESISTED ARREST. You take him to the ground when that happens. If he was too fragile to be taken the ground he shouldn’t have resisted. This is the result of his own choices and no liabiltity rides with the officers.

He chose to do whatever go him the complaint. Choice #1
He chose to resist arrest resulting in the use of force( duh ). Choice #2

Now when I was a kid and I am only 22 now, I was taught that I would be held responsible for the choices I made in life. All of you are saying that if you fight the law it’s the laws fault if you get hurt. No wonder you live in a depressed run down part of Oregon with a huge crime rate. I hope the man recovers but its his own fault.

As for the officers. Any officer can have complaints. Give someone a ticket for speeding, they can complain. ITS THAT SIMPLE FOLKS.

Why are these officers still on the clock. with over a dozen complaints on one of the officers, why while the victon was on the the ground not breathing wasn't cpr started by one of officers involved they noted he had stopped breathing? did they just stand there and watch &wait for emergency personal

Think About It wrote on Jan 24, 2008 7:20 PM:

The Officer's only need to ask for forgiveness if they did anything wrong in the eyes of The Lord. I believe that there is no need to ask for forgiveness, as I believe their intent was honorable. If you judge these Officer's, then perhaps it should be you who asks for forgiveness, as it is a sin the judge others.

Medical Fund wrote on Jan 24, 2008 6:40 PM:

Does the Foster family have medical insurance or has a donation fund been set up to help the family with medical expenses? Just wondering. His bill must really be piling up.

just a reader wrote on Jan 24, 2008 3:48 PM:

Well, I just read the new and revised update that Mr. Foster's condition has worsened. As if it wasn't bad enough now he is in critical condition. We need to focus our attention on him and his family at this time and pray for them. All this bickering isn't going to make him any better. If you believe in the power of prayer folks use it now. For those of you that don't, reach out to this family and try to help them however you can. To the officers involved, you REALLY better start praying for forgiveness!!
