Southwestern Oregon Community College is hosting a workshop on spinning and knitting wool, starting Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Curry County.

Participants will learn to spin yarn and then knit items with the yarn they produce. In the first seven weeks, the course will cover basic spinning and using the drop spindle, with the instructor using the drop spindle and spinning wheel. Students may bring their own wheels, but it is not required. Students also will learn about the different kinds of yarn that can be hand-spun, as well as their uses.

The final four weeks of the term will cover knitting with hand-spun yarns.

Individuals can take this workshop in its entirety, or attend only the spinning or knitting portions. Cost of the combined workshop is $60, along with a $15 materials fee to cover the cost of fiber and a drop spindle. Fees for the spinning workshops are $40 and $15 for materials, and the knitting portion costs $20. Participants are encouraged to bring their own straight knitting needles size 8 or 10 and a skein of wool or wool-blend yarn.
