Bandon exploded for 40 points in the second quarter to come back from an early deficit on the way to an 85-81 Sunset Conference boys basketball win over visiting Gold Beach on Tuesday.

“Sometimes we barely score 40 points in a game,” said Bandon coach Matt Angove.

The Tigers had a disappointing first quarter and trailed the Panthers 23-7. They then grabbed a 47-42 lead by halftime.

Forcing turnovers and pressing hard were key to Bandon’s outstanding second quarter. The Tigers’ shooting also was on target as they made five 3-pointers, a big improvement over their game against Glide a few weeks ago, in which they went 0-for-13 on treys.

Eight different Bandon players were able to score in the second quarter, including 15 points from Max DeVillers. DeVillers had 32 for the game.

Despite the crushing second quarter, the Panthers trailed by just three as they entered the fourth quarter. They were able to hit four 3-pointers, cutting the gap to two with six seconds left. Bandon’s Connor Jackson made two free throws with two seconds remaining to secure the win. Jackson finished with 13  points and Garth Gant added 11 points for Bandon.

Leading Gold Beach was Todd Martin with 17 points while teammates Jeff Knox and Garrett Craig had 16 points and 12 points, respectively.

Coquille wins on road

Coquille held off host Reedsport to continue a recent hot streak, beating the Braves 73-66 on Tuesday.

Joseph Savala had 27 points, most coming off offensive rebounds, to lift the Red Devils to their third win in four games — the lone loss a one-point setback in the final seconds to host Bandon last Friday.

Heston Altenbach added 14 points, while Rocky Jones had 12 and Shane Coleman 11 for Coquille.

Jason Fishel had 19 points and Cody Savey and Sean Horton 13 each for the Braves, who earlier had beaten the Red Devils in a tournament and in overtime in the league opener.

“They played well,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh. “It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season.”

Coquille was able to handle Reedsport’s pressure and also won with hustle.

“They were on loose balls more than we were,” Hixenbaugh said. “They just kind of outplayed us.”

Bulldogs top Bobcats

North Bend pounded host Myrtle Point 61-30 Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Luke Clark led North Bend with 15 points, eight of which came in the first quarter. Elliot Adams added 10 points.

Myrtle Point coach Bill Looney felt his team lacked the intensity needed to challenge the Bulldogs.

“When you don’t have intensity against a good team, this is what happens,” said Looney.

Garren Hitner led the Bobcats with seven points.

Challengers crush Glide

Glide was smashed 62-17 by host Cascade Christian in Tuesday’s Skyline League play.

Jarrod Hess had a game-high 14 points for the league-leading Challengers while Scott Morse scored 13. Jeremy Cheney had 12 points and Ben Joffer had 10.

Leading the Wildcats were Patrick Standish and Christian Clark with five points each.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Midwestern League

Pirates win again

Marshfield made it three straight Midwestern League wins, avenging an earlier loss to Thurston with a 61-52 road victory Tuesday night.

“The girls came off the bus ready to play, so that was nice to see, especially after losing to Thurston the first time around,” said Marshfield coach Debbie Dunbar. “There was a lot of pressure on these kids, but they do well under pressure.”

Marshfield jumped out front with a big first quarter and held on, using pressure defense and patient offense to create lots of good looks.

Brianna George finished with 19 points and Moriah Roberge and Mel Stout added 13 each for the Pirates.

Ali Worthen had six points, but more importantly, added 11 rebounds.

“That was critical in this game,” Dunbar said. “The one thing we’re going to have to do to beat teams is beat them on the boards.”

Marshfield had a 42-27 rebounding edge, including the work of Worthen and Stout, who converted several offensive rebounds to put-backs.

Haley Partridge and Natalie Smith had 10 points each to lead the Colts.

Marshfield has got itself back into contention in the league standings and now is tied for third place with North Eugene, its opponent Friday at home.

“Three wins in a row — I told the girls to feel what it feels like and to take that emotion and that excitement and that adrenaline into the next game against North,” Dunbar said.

“They’re great competitors. They’re competing. They’re playing well as a team.”

Sunset Conference

Devils top Braves

Coquille pulled away from Reedsport in the second quarter and held on for a 54-43 win over the host Braves on Tuesday to remain alone in second place in the Sunset Conference standings.

Kalei Libby and Emily Usselman had 14 points each and Mary Jo Pflaum added 10 for the Red Devils.

Hannah Smith had 18 points, Brianna Ekelund 10 and Jessica Cooper eight for the Braves, who were blown out by the Red Devils in the league opener, but kept Tuesday’s game close.

“With about three-and-a-half minutes to go, it was a pretty close ballgame,” said Reedsport coach Lynn Fulps.

“They have a pretty good program. (Coach) Jennifer (Sproul) has done a nice job with those kids. They play hard and they kept their composure. We had ample opportunity to do what we needed to do and we just couldn’t get it done.”

Fulps likes how his team is improving, though.

“Hannah and Brianna and Jessica Cooper all played really well tonight,” he said. “We’re getting closer.”

Panthers edge Tigers

Visiting Gold Beach tipped Bandon 40-38 in Tuesday’s Sunset Conference game.

The Tigers led the entire game until the third quarter, when the Panthers outscored them 14-8 to take a 27-25 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Bandon coach Ken Nice thought both teams played a hard-fought and competitive game.

“We had plenty of chances,” said Nice. “It was a disappointing loss.”

Becky Butler had a game-high 19 points for the Tigers.

Leading Gold Beach was Kourtney Moore with 13 points.

Bobcats beat Bulldogs

Myrtle Point topped visiting North Bend 35-23 in a nonleague game Tuesday.

The game remained tight until the fourth quarter, when the Bobcats were able to outscore the Bulldogs 16-3.

Both teams struggled with shooting and neither was aggressive going to the hoop, Myrtle Point coach Marty Stallard said. Neither team reached seven fouls in either half.

“We were pretty flat,” Stallard said. “We played without emotion.”

Challengers top Glide

Host Cascade Christian beat Glide 41-30 on Tuesday.

Although the Challengers were offensively off in the first half, they made up for it with their impeccable defense. The Wildcats were only able to score eight in the first half with just one point in the first quarter.

Even with a slow offense, 11 different players scored points for Cascade Christian as Becca Sellers led with eight. Andri Vondra had eight rebounds and two points while freshman Aleena Cesaro took four steals and scored six.

Leading Glide with 10 points was Jessica Hately.

SWIMMING

NB girls sweep

North Bend’s girls swim team beat Henley and Phoenix in a pair of duals at Southern Oregon University despite winning just three of the 11 events on the day.

North Bend’s boys edged Phoenix, but lost to Henley, while posting victories in six races.

Rachel Heaney and Kelli Kronsberg went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke and Amy Walker and Mallory Crocker took the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke to lead North Bend’s girls.

Emily Hepworth had the other win, in the 500 freestyle, while Heaney, Sarah Brown and Gwen Rogers all finished second in at least one event.

The Bulldogs beat Henley 138-115 and Phoenix 145-117.

Matt Johnson and James Verger each had two wins for North Bend’s boys, with Johnson taking the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly and Verger racing to victory in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle.

Daniel Canaga won the 100 backstroke for the Bulldogs and teamed with Johnson, Verger and Dan Flora to take the 400 freestyle relay.

North Bend beat Phoenix 108-106, but fell to Henley 124-118.

The double-dual gave the Bulldogs a chance to face two foes in their special district and also race in the pool that will host the upcoming district meet.
