Sunset Middle School’s eight-grade varsity girls basketball team finished first in the Sunset Invitational tournament last weekend, beating Coquille 31-23 in the championship game.
Kara Young led the Sunset White team with 27 points in the final game of the tournament which featured both varsity and junior-varsity teams from the seventh-and eight-grades.
Coquille came into the championship game undefeated on the year, including a victory over the Sunset White in the championship game of the Memorial Tournament on Dec. 15., but the Dolphins proved too much to handle the second time around.
The Sunset White team includes Ashton Morgan, Young, Val McNulty, Lisa Donato, Taryn Hurley, Rachelle Johnson, Marissa Luckman, Heidi Boesl and Amanda Klecka.
Riley Creek from Gold Beach defeated Myrtle Point in the third-place game while Sunset Blue beat North Bend in the fourth-place match-up to finish up the eight-grade varsity bracket.
On the junior varsity side, Siuslaw defeated Reedsport in the championship game followed by Bandon in third place and Blanco in fourth.
Coquille’s seventh-grade team found themselves in the championship game as well, but came up short to tournament champion Powers. Sunset White beat North Bend for third place and Sunset Blue defeated Azalea in the fourth-place game.
In the seventh-grade junior-varsity bracket, Reedsport beat Siuslaw in the championship game and North Bend and Coquille finished third and fourth, respectively.
