Local coach selected for statewide AAU post

Local coach Anthony Moore has been selected to lead Oregon’s junior national AAU team for next year. The team will play a 48-game schedule in preparation for the national tournament.

“It is a great honor and pleasure to coach for this great organization,” Coach Moore said.

Moore is a veteran coach of AAU basketball, leading the Southern California juniors to top-five finishes for two consecutive years. The Southern Oregon Junior select team, the Oregon Express, led by leading scorer and rebounder Andrea Moore and multitalented Jake Lucero, both of North Bend, was the top-ranked team in Oregon for three years.

Bay Area swimmers again

national champions

Following last year’s success, a pair of local masters swimmers again are national champions in long-distance postal events. Karen Matson, in the 40- to 44-year-old age group and Ralph Mohr (65-69), again were on national champion relay teams from Oregon in the 3,000- to 6,000-yard Postal Swimming Championships.

Matson, combined with swimmers from Portland and Redmond, won the women’s 35+ relay in the 3x6,000-yard event, setting a new Oregon record along the way. Matson also was on a team from Oregon that was third in the nation in the 3x6,000-yard relay for 18-and-older swimmers.

Individually, Matson placed seventh overall in the 3,000-yard swim in her age group with a time of 38 minutes, 8.98 seconds and fourth in the 6,000-yard swim, going one hour, 18 minutes and 18 seconds. Also swimming in the 3,000 was local Jayna Tomac, who was third in the 35-39 year old age group for women with the time of 38 minutes, 28.99 seconds.

Mohr placed first in two relays, helping to set two national records in the 65-69 men’s age group. He was linked with swimmers from Sisters and Beaverton in the 3x3,000 relay for 65-69 year old men, breaking the old national record by 52 minutes.

Mohr also placed third overall in the 3,000 in his age group with a time of 46 minutes and 10 seconds. In the 6,000 he was second nationally with a time of one hour, 33 minutes and 52 seconds. The postal events in masters swimming allow swimmers all over the country to swim long distances in their own pools and compare times for awards. Local swimmers will participate next during the month of January in the Postal One Hour National Championships.

Anyone interested in learning more about masters swimming can come to Mingus Park Pool from 7 to 9 a.m., Saturday or Sunday, or contact Mohr at 269-1565.
