The Coos County Chapter of Oregon Right to Life is accepting drawings, essays and speeches from grade school, middle and high school students for the 2008 ORTL Education Foundation Oratory, Essay and Drawing Contest.

This year’s theme is “Life Makes Dreams Come True.” Entries that win first place in the local competition will be submitted to the state contest.

The essay contest is divided into three divisions. Essays for students in grades 5 and 6 should be 200 to 300 words. Those for grades 7-9 should be 300 to 400 words. Those for grades 10-12 should be 400-500 words. Essays will be judged on general organization, grammar, clarity of message, originality and incorporation of the theme.

The drawing contest is divided by age, kindergarten, first and second grade, third through fifth grade, sixth through eighth grade, ninth through 10th grade, and 11th to 12th. All artwork should be original and on a paper no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches. Collages are considered original artistic expressions.

The Oratory Contest has no specific theme and is open to any high school junior or senior in Oregon. The five- to seven-minute speech can focus on abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, infanticide, stem cell research or the connection between abortion and breast cancer. The first-place winner of the state contest also will receive a prize of $400 and an expense paid trip to the National Right to Life Convention in Washington, D.C., to compete in the national contest on July 5. The second-place winner of the state competition will receive a $300 prize, and the third-prize winner will receive $200.

The deadline is Feb. 16.
